Has anybody had a problem with too much oil going into the intake from the hose attached to the bottom? I tried to search for it, but I don't think the search on badweb is working... It is running well, but when i rev it real quick you can really see the soot coming out. Its making my swingarm all black. I just had a mechanic look at it and he said the problem could be too much oil coming into the intake.

search for "breather reroute (or re-route)". most take that hose out of the intake and either route it so it vent to the ground (what I did) or into a catch can that you would need to drain every so often. it'll make your bike run smoother too.

this is a common and known problem on this bikes. The venting for the crankcase does not breath correctly. This causes a high crankcase pressure and blows out out. What most do is disconnect the hose from the intake and run it to a catch can with a breather.

Better yet, swap to XB rocker covers with real working PCV valves.

+1 on XB rocker covers. If you have a lot of oil coming through, you may have worn umbrella valves in the lower rocker covers, which would let more oil pass through than necessary for the crankcase to breathe. Best way to find out is reroute the breathers into a catchcan, and if it fills up quickly, you most likely need new umbrella valves. If you switch to XB rocker covers, you don't have to worry about the umbrella valves; just plug the head breathers and route the lines from the PCV valves to a catchcan. You'll have next to no oil in the can with the XB covers.

Running your oil half way between the marks instead of all the way full seems to reduce the puking as well. I don't know why. We've beat it to death here, and I've yet to hear a rational explanation. It seems to help though.

The symptoms you describe sound like a rich (carb or Efi) fuel condition rather than oil. Check the spark plugs. If they are also black, "sooty" like the exhaust tip , check the fuel system. Usually oil burns blue and leaves a wet residue, too much fuel is black and dry soot. Hope this helps.

another +1 on XB conversion, WELL worth the money IMHO.

i still route the breather into the intake but my intake is now dry.

Yeah, the plugs were getting black, dry soot. So what should I do if there is indeed a fuel problem? ECMspy? Yeah, it looks like the XB heads are the way to go. And does it matter if the rocker covers are xb9 or xb12? I'll try to put the breather hose in a catch can and see how much comes out. Then i'll have a better idea. Thanks all

XB9 or XB12, doesn't matter. Search for XB rocker conversion, someone has put together a part number list. It's a pretty cheap fix.

I recommend the catch can method. I routed a hose from the breather bolts to a Fram 3HP Fuel filter under the seat and have it exit next to the primary vent hose. I change the filter at every oil change. Problem solved.

Find appropriate hoses, zip ties and "T" fittings at your local QUALITY auto shop.

Many solutions to this one...

cool. i got some tubing, and i'm just gonna exit in the rear. i put a catch on it, and there was indeed quite a bit of oil, considering i only drove it about 10 miles. Whenever I get a chance, I'll probably just switch to the XB rockers since I'm gonna have to put new gaskets on it soon, leaking from the top...
