I picked up my 2000 M2 on Wednesday, it is a 2000 and had 2 km on the clock. A dealer had a couple tubers that did not sell and a local car dealer bought them as a package because he wanted one. I bought the M2 from him.

So today, I pulled the intake and carb to install a 45 slow jet, re-routed the breather lines, and put a Forcewinder on. My question is how in the heck do you adjust the air/fuel screw when everything is at operating temp? Every time I stick my paw in with a screw driver and attempt to turn the screw with the painter shaker running, I smell burning flesh! I set it at 2.5 turns when I installed it and so far so good but I wanted to try the idle drop method as a check.

I must be a moron. Please enlighten me.

I ended up using leather welding gloves but thought there must be a better way.

Looooooong screw driver.

Seems like Court or Blake recommends something like a 11" screw driver for this.

I replaced my mixture screw with a brass knobby thing, it's still hot down there when running, and the bike just shakes itself into your hand anyway.

Here's the info from my reciept, purchased the screw from direct parts.com May of 2005:

When Terry Parsely was monkeying with mine at the Vallejo place he used one of these tools, reviewed here (sorry, with a Yamaha) it is very expensive though :

I made a dohicky with a flexible shaft like the idle adjust- drilled and epoxied together but so far so good.

My '02 has a long flexible adjuster sticking out on the right hand side just under the back of the tank near the seat.

Is it just the last of the M2's that had this?

Hey that's a good idea. How can we adapt the Idle Adjuster Cable to the Idle Air Adjustment screw? That would solve this whole problem...

I don't think you can adapt it.

Turn the bike off. Adjust in 1/8 or 1/4 turn increments (I use the screwdriver "socket" for a power drill, but with no power drill - short, fits nicely, and if you put marks on it showing 1/4 and 1/8 turn spacing...you're "indexed"). Fire bike back up. Ride. Repeat until happy. Works for me every time, and I still have all the skin on my hand : )

How about a screwdriver bit, mounted through a little plastic or thin metal tab, bolted under a float bowl bolt, with the end of an Idle Air cable soldered to the back of the bit? You'd have an 'extra' idle adjuster cable, maybe make it poke out somewhere differently.
Then one could adjust the Idle Air Mixture on-the-fly easily. If this could be manufactured to fit Sportsters too, one could sell thousands of them. Hey who was that looking for something to machine with his shop?
