Ran my 1997 S3T on HD 20W50 Dyno oil to 60K miles, at which time "i" switched to SYN3 HD 20W50 ...

Run same in transmission !!!

As of last ride it now has 107,385.0 miles on engine/transmission/clutch ...

I run amsoil. IT is especially good for air cooled engines. It runs about 20-30 degrees cooler than the HD Syn.

The rest of the STORY !!!

Run a return line oil filter, oil cooler(with thermostat) and a FAN(loud fans save lives) ...

And a TEMPERATURE GAUGE in the return oil line at the oil tank ...

Timing mark just coming into the rear of the timing plug hole(timing advanced) ...

MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!!

On my test bed "BLAST", it will have the oil temperature sensor in the return line at the oil pump ...

Ha Ha, he's ridden A LOT and is a great source for part numbers and all sorts of good info (check out the list of mods he's chronicled in his profile)...

...but I have asked Buellistic that very same question a few times.

There's a lot of synth's out there, they will make your tranny shift easier.
Many have run these bikes in hot weather with out need of a oil cooler. Synth will lower your operating temps and stand up better under those conditions.

Commuting in heavy traffic? At least run the dyna's filter to increase you capacity and give the oil more time to cool while it cycles through the system.

BUELLers:

What makes you TRANSMISSION shift better, go in and out of neutral, and just generally all around work better is how good you can adjust your clutch, adjust your primary chain and drive belt, keep the correct oil level in your transmission "AND" last but not lest, HOW CORRECTLY YOU SET UP YOU SHIFTER TO FIT OUR FOOT ...

"20 to 30 degrees cooler" due to synthetic oil?

Not likely. Synthetic oil provides some real and tangible benefits, but it's superior properties cannot account for such a large temperature difference. Something else must be responsible for your noted change in engine temperature.

I believe it's because synthetic oil's better lubricating qualities cut back the heat-building friction between moving parts that causes the drop in operating temp. I don't think I've ever seen 30* less, but it's significant. Maybe 20* on a good day. I run Amsoil as well, and a Purolator Pure One 30001 oil filter. I believe the oil itself may cool faster than conventional oil too, but I've no proof of any such theory.

The "ANSWER" is how well it "LUBRICATES", not how cool it runs !!!

I have been using Mobil 1 V Twin 20-50.

It is supposed to be formulated for higher temperatures and is OK for wet clutches so I now use it in motor, trans, and primary.

It sells for $8.97 per quart at Wall Mart but you have to look in the RV section.

HD Syn 3 has a good reputation but I paid $12.95 for the last quart I bought a while back.

Amsoil has all it's one numbers all you have to do is log into there website and they have the dino numbers. Synthetic oil does make the transmission shift alot better. I wasn't sold on it either until I tried it but it actually works alot better than just regular primary oil. Not shure about any other syn, the only one I've ever tied is the amsoil, but if it works why change it !!!

The mythology surrounding synthetic oil is amazing on both sides (pro and con) of the issue.

I had Mobile 1 20/50 than used HD syn III 15/50. Now the bike has a slight tick after idling for awhile when hot. Just my experience

I use Torco because Sunoco make the HD stuff and oils ain't oils...

Kendall is awesome! Mobil 1 V-twin is also awesome! But I use the Torco because it lubricates extremely well in air-cooled V-twins, and it is readily available through my mechanic.

He reckons the price difference between the Kendall and the Torco doesn't justify going Kendall but either is better than the HD stuff!

Heat transfer is always going to be of concern to oil in an air-cooled motor but not if it gets changed every 5000kms.

At the end of the day, frequency of change trumps the brand or viscosity of oil!

I have run Royal Purple in a few different motors....thought I would give it a try in my new (to me ) 99 X1.....has had Synthetic since new.
Got the Royal Purple for like $7.00 a quart at Pep-Boys....they always stock it so easy to come by.
They even carry a full line of R-P filters....under $15 if memory serves me

Hey I have a question about how often to change the oil.

If I'm using the HD 20w50 in the motor and Formula + in the tranny/ primary.
Is it 5000 miles for the engine and 5000 for the tranny/primary?

Or is it 3000 for the engine and 5000 for the tranny/primary.

Does the synthetic oil change out the same,or can you get more mileage if I switch to it in all 3 holes

I'm riding an 01 M2

Reason I ask is, I just turned over 5000 miles today, but I had the oil and tranny fluids changed at 1500 miles.

I was thinking of switching to the syn 3 now to get back on track with the regular maintenance intervals
Thanks

I use Royal Purple MaxCycle in the engine, Formula+ in the tranny. I tried the RP in the tranny once, but didn't like the way my shifts felt, so changed back to the Formula+

Right now I'm only using the RP because I've still got half a case to go through. After that I'll be trying out Redline, Mobil-1, or Amsoil. This is a stupid reason not to like RP, but I change my oil every 2500 miles which should mean it's still relatively clean. Well since the oil starts out purple, it always looks black when it comes out. I want to know how dirty the oil is getting at each change - starting with clear (sort of) oil should tell me.

I don't think brand difference matters nearly as much as the difference between synthetic and dino, and different weights.

There is nothing wrong with running Wal-Mart SuperTech Filters as "i" have 107,444.7 miles on my 1997 S3T as of the last ride ...

Wrong Syn 3 is made by Citgo. It was asked during a P.O.T. back when it was introduced.

Ok, good to know. Maybe Sunoco only make the HD Dino or ???

I remember that HD and Sunoco were in bed together at some stage.

Cheers for that...
