Talk to Pammy at Cycle Rama. She'll tell you the truth whether you go with them or not. Oversize stock pistons with a bore and hone with good head work and cams is the way to go. Displacement won't make the difference if the heads and cams aren't there. I would rather have a good set of pistons, cams and headwork than some 45-50cc displacement increase with different pistons. No comparison in performance increase. Do the heads, get some cams and domed pistons and have fun. If you want to bump displacement go with a 88" kit. Ride safe, BR.

See, I DO agree with talking to Pammy, and other builders...

I was specifically talked OUT of an 88" kit..

Once we talked about MY riding style, habits, etc...

It was decided, that a 1250, some serious head work, and a healthy set of cams, and things would be... happier...

It all depends on YOU, how YOU ride, and what you can spend....

If I had 10 grand, I would have gone with aftermarket cases, and 88 or 90 inch... and shot for the moon....

Chase, all good points. If you do the homework, you'll see that headwork, cams, pistons will make more power than just some headwork and a 1250 kit. You have to do the cams to make the heads work. To give an example I'm putting my X1 back together with 10.5:1 domed pistons(.015 overbore), Stage 2 heads(NHRS), 575 cams. If you ad it all up, I was within 100.00 or so of just a Stage 2 "lite" with a 1250 kit and using my .497 cams. There is no way a 1250 Stage 1 or Stage 2 motor with .497 cams will make the power of a Stage 2 with .575 cams with a stock bore. The reason is that the 497 cams are simply limited. They would have a hard time getting to a 100 HP at 10.5:1. The 575's will make the same torque if not more than the 497's but at least 5-10 more HP in my example. I really like the .497 cams in both of my Buells but they won't touch a .575 cammed bike with the same heads. I can't afford to do both right now. I don't think the 45-50cc makes any real difference in this example. I would rather spend the money to make the heads and cams work real good together than to get a very slight increase in displacement. You were right it just depends on "You". I pointed out what I have because I'm a budget minded guy that wants the biggest bang for the buck. Thanks, Frank.

hey Frank, I've run both the .497 cams and the .575 cams in a stock bore 1200, ported XB heads, 44mm carb, XB9 pistons. With the .497 cams, it made 102hp. Never dynoed the .575 cams, but it is consistently about 2/10s quicker in the quarter mile and about 2mph faster...if i were guessing, I would say I was in the 107hp range now. The .575 have never equaled my best 60 ft time with the .497 cams, and I had to add two teeth to the rear sprocket. The .575 are definitely lacking in low to mid range torque vs the .497 cam with my set up, but make up for it in the upper mid range and top end.

My bike is just used solely for drag racing, but my gut feel is the .575 would be a little disappointing on the street with my set up. The .497 have proven to be a really nice no compromise cam that responds well to performance mods. Of course the .575 have the upper hand above 5500rpm and sound totally bad ass at idle if you are looking for that. Again, no dyno data but based on the changes i had to make to my drag bike with my set up, it sure feels like peak torque is down, at low mid range torque is definitely down. I just made my 1,239 pass on this bike last week

Just my .02...pretty fun stuff either way. Whatever floats your boat.

No wheelie bar, 7" over swingarm with a strut. best 60' with the .497 is 1.587. Best 60ft with .575 is 1.599. Best ET with the .497 was 10.783@123mph, best with the .575 cams is 10.620 @125.something...on average the 497 were around 10.89-90 while on average the .575 goes 10.75 or so. The engine is identical between the two configs save for the cams and a valve job with a slihghtly narrower seat. With the Wiseco's, it came in at 12.3:1....

heres a pic of the bike a few years ago....it is now black with orange pinstripe on the wheels. Pipe is a small diameter Force open/reverse meg. The bike is geared to run through the traps in 4th. Without a wheelie bar, it wants to loop over with any shorter gearing plus i can run 1st out a little longer (it is foot shift, GP pattern)
