why not just get a drill powered pump ,some tube & just suck out the old oil? Any reason this idea will not work?

EZ / Hugh..
Oil is trapped in the damper assmb,tuber oil change is a little easier than Xb,

loosen caps [ you may have to fiddle with the bars & dash ]
remove frt wheel, brake caliper, & fender
remove legs, remove cap from leg, then damper
pull down on spacer, remove clip, spacer & spring.
dump oil, pump damper several times 10 or more
dump oil,
add 1/2 new oil, pump damper( to refill ) collapse leg and fill to FSM specified level
replace spring,catch damper rod on spacer, insert clip
install top nut on damper, install topnut in leg

Re assm [ this is for Showa forks X1 ]

Oldog,

Thanks for the info and link. I haven't looked at the FSM lately, but I thought it required the use of a factory spring compressor tool ($$$). The XB thread showed using a bike tie down strap as a substitute.

I take it from what your post says you can generally do the job without this?

Hugh:
I am no Bear: I was able to pull down on the spacer enough to remove the keeper with my hand
the XB spacer looks like its a LOT longer, and tool / strap would be needed.
I trapped the spacer under the steel shoulder of the damper assm, slipped the keeper in and tapped the keeper 1 time and every thing snapped into place.
