I have an 05 xb9sx... is it even possible to get a whole factory motor, assembled or otherwise? if not, what years can I look for in the junkyard that would fit with little or no adjustment? | ||

You can still get brand new motors, but you will find that the cost is not favorable. Any 03-05 XB9 motor will bolt right in, but anything newer or a XB12 motor will require more effort due to changes in the fuel injection systems among other things. | ||

that was swift, thanks  I hope you don't mind a little extra inquisitiveness: is $1.5k for an 05 motor with 5k miles on it reasonable (ebay, shipped)? assuming it's in otherwise good condition, and I can verify that... the new motors, are they actually for 03-05 models? would anything in your experience suggest that getting one at a comparable cost with a little social engineering might be possible? military discounts? | ||

I found the one you are talking about, the Pinwall guys are good. Going price is around a grand, and shipping ain't cheap either, so $1500 for the package sounds fair Yes you can get brand new motors with 05 specs, but you will pay through the nose ($3,296.29 + tax/shipping, etc), and wait forever. Some of the Badweb sponsors offer various discounts, but even 10-15% off will still have your grand total at at least 3 grand. Now, why are you looking for a motor? It may be cheaper to repair. | ||

I'm afraid I'm not super mechanically inclined, but I was informed that one of the piston heads snapped off, which I imagine happened because it seized since about a cup of wretchedly filthy oil was all I was able to get out of the motor once I got it home. this happened as I was going down the highway at about 70mph and according to the mechanic, it did a rather impressive job of shredding everything around it. so, he doesn't think it can be repaired, and I don't have access to a garage or tools since I was, and will be, in a barracks, or barracks-like situation for the next few years. I'm under the impression that even if it was technically repairable, the speed of swapping the motor will make the cost comparable or far cheaper, and leave me with a motor, in this case, about 20k miles younger and with much less of a dubiously modified past. | ||

I have gotten stuff from Pinwall on several occasions - always exactly what they say it will be. Their website will have a link to a video of the actual motor you are buying in the vehicle it was taken from, running. What happened to the 2 quarts of oil you started the day with on your demolition run? It had to either leak or burn, did you see any signs before the catastrophic failure? | ||

I hadn't checked the oil since changing it right before I made the move from Phoenix, AZ to Monterey, CA with it. it succumbed to my negligence a few months and a few thousand miles later, though I'm not sure on the exact numbers... happened last christmas on the way back to Phoenix, made it as far as Quartzite, AZ. I saw no obvious leaks during that time in California, but it had plenty of time to be a slow one, it wasn't parked in the exact same spot every night, and even if it was, the asphalt may still have hidden it. basically, I was a moron and it was a fairly predictable outcome. |
