I ran My 03 XB on a dyno last weekend along side of a fellow badwebber. Mine has a race ECM and can, K&N filter and a 12 airbox. His is completely stock. The horse power was identical on both bikes at 75. I have not yet reset my TPS but I was disappointed. Any ideas???

Can you post a copy of the runs?

What was rear tire pressure in yours versus his? Higher pressure is more efficient and yields higher HP results.

Were both bikes dynoed by the same operator?

Was each bike supported or tied down in exactly the same manner? More weight on the rear axle diminishes HP reported; less weight improves reported HP.

Same correction factors?

Same shut off RPM?

Same gear? Fifth gear runs will produce higher HP results.

Were both bikes thoroughly warmed up, hot?

Cooler engine/oil can diminish reported HP.

What kind of oil do you use versus him? Different oils even of the same grade will often have different viscosity. Higher viscosity oil will diminish reported HP.

Lots and lots of variable can significantly affect dyno results.

How's it run?

The bikes went one after the other. Same dyno, same guy, same settings. I checked my tire pressure before leaving the house. I use Mobil 1 v-twin oil. I am not sure what he uses. My bike has about 4000 more miles on it though.

Different oil and tranny lube can make a big difference as can all the other possible variables mentioned above.

How many times did the operator run your bike prior to the final run?

What was your tire pressure versus that of the other bike.

It's also possible that the changes you mentioned don't increase maximum horsepower, especially without any change to the TPS.

What about where the peak occurred, and the duration, or width of the peak?

What about torque, and torque spread?

There's more to power than just peak HP.

The XB9 race kit should improve top end significantly.

The lack of a TPS reset for your race ECM could be throwing of the AFV such that it is running to lean to make optimum power up top. Get the TPS reset, ask the tech to tell you the change in the TPS voltage versus what the race ECM was using prior to the reset. Then retest and let us know what you find.

75 for a stock XB9 is about right..I'd expect to see 1 or 2 more at sea level on a dynojet 250. If your's is yielding the same value on the same dyno, yours has SOMETHING holding it back. Knowing what the AFV is would help. A race kitted XB9 should do a bit better than that.

Did you get one run or a family of runs? One or two back to back runs doesn't mean so much.

I'm not at all surprised. I did the dyno thing when I put a Drummer on mine. I got 1 HP at 6500rpm and less torque where I wanted it down low. I sold the Drummer the next day. If I have to listen to a loud exhaust I want the bike to perform a lot better and it didn't.

There are some people who think dynos don't tell you anything. They do.

Hey Eric, Don't be disappointed in your run. The main thing that needs to be checked on the run was off of the spark plug. On both of our bikes the plugs were not connected to the dyno. If you remember they did not want to stick there hands on a hot cylinder or take off all the body parts. That would have given us both the stock and mod differences that you were looking for. But I do agree that a reset would help.
Hey lets go ride.

o ya you could also get the tach signal off the primary wire going to the coil....those plug wires are a real b*tch to try to get too :-)

hp 75/77 is about all they do stock with or without a race ecm.
as al said. you want more you can tune it some. but you want bigger numbers you must open it up and start working on it.

you can tune in aprox 10 more hp avg. every now and then a bike get more but its not typical. the heads and cams are holding it back. xb9 the cams are too big. and the intake bowl shape is now worth a crap on a stock bike.

even with these corrections you will still be under 100 hp.

a lot of money for the work. just ride it and have fun.
