My X1 2000 has mystery motor noise; Was looking at dropping the oil pump to see if there is any signs of mischief happening under there. The sound is sort of a pulsating ,louder then softer, every second revolution may be.Hard to pinpoint.seems to be getting louder as the motor warms up.
The old girl is sitting there waiting for me to heal her up.already gone through the primary drive.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Have you been into the primary? The primary chain tensioner got beefed up mid year 2000. A bad or broken tensioner could definitely make a noise that changed amplitude as it warmed up. If yours in a early 2000, the primary chain tensioner should be changed to the one with the thicker plate.

You didn't say the mileage on the bike. Oil pump gears HAVE gone in as little as 15k, but more typically, the wear starts getting bad around 25K or so on an engine with only moderate pinion shaft runout.

If you have ruled out the tensioner, pull the belt off and put the bike in neutral, and spin the front belt sprocket by hand. If it feels crunchy or grindy, it could be your 5th gear drive assembly.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Bike has done 25000k. Newly installed primary chain and tensioner ,new detent plate ,new clutch basket bearings, new sprind plate with the bad reputation just in case,Pulled gearbox out, gears looked to be in good condition, Impossible to determine the condition of needle rollers inside the case by looking. The Gearbox shifts beautifully so I didn't suspect it.I like your Idea Of belt off test Bill.I will do that today,

I am still interested to know if a buggered worm drive for the oil pump makes a noise or any discernable symptoms at all.I have read posts that mention oil light coming as the first sign?
Sounds like An IED lurking under there. 8:20am 4/30/11

I pulled the belt off did the test on the front drive pulley ,there was a small amount of back and forth play in the drive sprocket bearing but no discernable crunchy or grindy feelings when you rotate it that I could tell. I found this this clip on youtube, has the sound near the beginning but as he walks around with the camera other noises kick in to confuse things.sounds like a bearing.

Hey Alfau, I just saw your mail in my inbox. Sorry I only use that email address to join websites etc. and rarely check it. As for the noise I am still unaware as to what it is. My bike is still in pieces in the shed. With parts and labor costing so much here and the fact that I dont know what the problem is I decided to look for second hand engine instead. None surfaced over winter then I recently got a good deal on a '07 XB12r. I am still keen to fix my other bike. I re-posted my problem a few months back. I thought some Harley Engine expert would be able to pinpoint the problem straight away given the symptoms and considering how common these engines are. No go. Could be this, might be that, try changing this. I can't afford time and money wise to change every potential problem part. If you can pin point your problem let me know.
