Al, You're on to me. Killen's a hoot! The quick way to De Luz after you break out of the Cleveland Forest scenic one-laner is turn RT on Via Volcano from Tenaja Rd then LT on Carancho for about 3 miles to the stop sign at De Luz. Via Volcano changes to Avacado Mesa and Los Gatos. I remember this road. It was the first Pasadena MC Poker Run I rode my (then) new Lightning on and noted the sign at the top of the hill that said "CAUTION: Grade Exceeds 26% in Some Places." I was thinking, Man this could get exciting really fast! I've been looking for this road ever since. Finally found it. Ski, Have you tried Sandia Creek Dr from De Luz just outside of Fallbrook, then RT on Avenida Del Oro to Rancho Calif Rd? It's a little straighter than De Luz. Don't tell your friends though. Killeen, De Luz and Sandia are some of my favorites along with the front side of Palomar. Used to live in MV, DP and LH and those roads were my back yard. The Ortega was just the freeway to reach the real fun roads. Left SoCal almost 4 years ago and was really shocked to learn that Killeen was paved. Was one of the best off road runs in the area. If you ever bump into any of the old Preparation H Motorcycle Club (PHMC) guys under the water tower at the Lookout, say "Hi" and give Barbara a kiss for me. A special thanks to all of you for posting the details of the roads and rides out there. The memories help tide me over until I can move back to "Heaven on Earth." | ||

Sparky, Don't know all the street names yet, but once on Sandia Creek, from De Luz, we go to the stop sign and turn left. Then straight through 3 stop signs, then 2 rights on to Rancho California. Love that road. I only tell fellow riders about it trust me, really sucks getting stuck behind cars.....Like that happens for long....LOL | ||

I believe you are referring to Clinton Keith Road. Unless you are up in the hills by the lake or dropping down from the Santa Rosa flats through AvacadoLand (Los Gatos?). edited by nevco1 on September 16, 2003 edited by nevco1 on September 16, 2003 | ||

I'm still in the middle of laying out the Oct ride. Basically I'd like to do a 100-120 mile CCW loop from Quaids Temecula to include the Temecula Valley, Elsinore, the Lookout, Killen & the roads I mentioned before plus maybe an alternate (thanks, Nevco1) for the less adventureous hooligans. Looking into other possibilities. What're yer faves? We'll be in the area next Sunday for the Heart to Heart ride at Biggs in Oceanside. Not so much for the poker run but to layout the BRAG ride. Sparky...I must have tossed my Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego County maps. Plus, I gave my Thomas Guides away when I left So Cal. Will try and get replacements at the Auto Club, but in the interim, can you scan and email sections of these maps that interlink Lake Elsinore, Idyllwild, Borrego Springs, Julian, Fallbrook, Rancho California and Temecula. I tried map quest and it was not detailed enough. If you know of another map site that has the necessary detail, let me know and I will take it from there. Sparky...A friend is sending me new maps today. Should have the routes done for you this weekend. Dang, Milwaukee sure is a Hick Town. I drove all over hell and gone and couldn't find any SoCal county maps. Just the typical tourist junk that CalTrans did a better job on with the Freeway signs. | ||

Nevco1, Semantics got in the way of directing my question to everyone. I shoulda said, "What're y'all's faves?" or as they say in Louisiana, all y'all. Didn't mean to put you on the spot, but it's cool to see you're interested in the ole stomping grounds. Anyway, my maps aren't very good, they're too old. Since I'm not an Auto Club member, all my friends who are give me their old maps, not that I'm cheap or anything, but they're free. What I like to do is dig out my old MC ride route sheets and re-trace what's been done before. So for the last several years in Northern San Diego area at least, our good buddy Jerry Johnson has pretty much picked the best sport roads in the area. But not all. There still are some fun roads out there as you mentioned & as Al & I have found out that have not yet been made into a good run for us Buellers. So that's my quest for Oct. All, The Crest is open from Devore all the way over to Glendale. Apparently there was some minor financial intrigue that kept it closed even after the work was completed. I've been up and over about 3 or so times in the past couple months. | ||

Hey, I saw a Huell Howser special on the old Ridge Route a couple days ago. They mentioned the road has an outrageous number of turns (I forgot exactly how many) between Castaic & Hwy 138, some 30 odd miles. We could take Lake Elizabeth to Lake Hughes Rd, do the Ridge Route & head back to Harley's Rock Inn for lunch. For Glendale's BRAG ride, does this sound like Adventure? | ||

Hmmm, Deal's Gap: 318 turns in 11 Miles (29 turns/Mile) Ridge Road: 697 Turns in 27 Miles (26 Turns/Mile) I hope that the road conditions are awesome, and we don't run accross the Model T club James | ||

A woman at work just did the "Ridge Route" with her husband on his/hers Fatboys. Seems to me that she had said it was pretty bumpy in many places but a nice scenic ride. I'd recommend we get somebody with recent first-hand experience - I will ask her tomorrow to see if I am remembering correctly. | ||

Sparky, I talked to the folks here about the Ridge Route and it is VERY winding with sections of dirt and was told to expect rocks once in a while. Gorgeous scenery but you just have to take it really slow - a couple pavement/dirt/pavement transitions. |
