Anyone experience a similar issue and know why it would do it?

The bike skips a spark on the throttle in 3rd gear, and only 3rd gear, it's around 3k - 3.5k on the tach but not always at the same revs. It feels just like hitting the rev limiter, skips a spark and then keeps going without issues. Does it every time I shift to 3rd and gas it, but only does it once.
I figure it's an issue with the comp, but not sure how this could come about. The only thing that comes to mind is the regulator going, because my lights like to spontaneously flare for a couple seconds as if I'm high-beaming opposing traffic.

Alright, from what I could think up, the issue probably is the 77 connector and it probably screwed up the ecm.

Yes, check the regulator and connector. The Ecm is probably fine unless it happened during a data log and you build a map with the glitched data.

It should be happening in all gears at that rpm since the generator is spinning at the same speed unless it is something like it needs to be in that range for a few seconds, should be able to reproduce it in fourth or fifth.

Check the speed sensor,and the chassis grounds..

Alright, I checked the grounds, sanded them and re-connected. Are there any other grounds other than the two on the subframe?

The 77 connector and all the others in that bunch look new, no sign of heat from a bad connection. The ETS wire and the O2 sensor wires look good, but I loosely zip-tied them from rubbing against the rear head just in case.

Still does it, only in 3rd gear and only one time. After it skips a spark on acceleration, it won't do it again until the next time I accelerate from 3k in 3rd gear.

If I'm WOT and shift into 3rd with the revs above 4k it won't do it, only if I accelerate from low rpms (2.5-3k)in 3rd.

The headlights are still flaring up after checking/cleaning grounds, so I definitely need to order a new VR and hopefully that will fix the the misfire, just weird that it's only in 3rd gear!

Are you sure it's missfiring and not hopping out of gear a tooth?
My X1 started to do that on second gear. If I nailed it, it would shift fine but if I rolled on the gas, it would hop.
By the time I finally got around to having it fixed, it got bad enough so that it popped the front wheel up. (kinda bad in a curve)

I bring this up only because there is no way for your engine to "know" what gear the tranny is in other than "not neutral".

Just damn, you bring up a really good point. If that's it, then I guess I'll be skipping 3rd for a while, at least until I have the money and time. May as well do a full rebuild then.

Speed, vs Throttle position, vs load on Engine = skip.
Possible trans but doubtfull.
Replace VR if your overcharging your also sending "over voltage" to ecu and sensors. all things come together at speed/rpm/ load .
(Don't yell ) new HD s have gear indicator logic, BUT NO gear position sensor, it's done with engine/speed/load input algorithms.
Just my opinion, hope it helps

For anyone that searches the forum for a related issue and stumbles upon this thread. I've ruled everything else out and declared the issue being worn 3rd gear dogs. Looks like I'll be skipping 3rd gear until I have the $$ and time to fix it.

It's amazing that this could happen in under 20k miles.
