Any ideas on why my speed sensor would die. This is the second one in less then 3000 miles.

You have a 2003 XB9S according to your profile.

You need the updated sensor assembly and retrofit kit. I think there is a service bulletin on this, or else someone was just quoting the instruction sheet.

That part MAY still be covered under warranty. Even if you bought it over the counter. Most shops have a 90 day warranty on parts. If you had it installed, it should definitely be covered.

Make sure they give you the correct part this time. The original part SHOULD be obsolete in the computer, but who knows?
