Hi,

I think the advice given has mostly been excellent, particularly from H2owerker and Thetable. I don't think you can go wrong with a 250 Ninja for a first bike or a Blast. That's what my oldest son did (Ninja) subsequently trading up to a 636. I love Buells. I have three of them (X-1, XB-12, 1125R). I'm pretty sure that I need another one too. I have only had a problem with one of them and described that in my profile. It got fixed. For a first bike, I think that starting with something smaller would be an excellent choice. A first bike is kind of like going on a blind date. You probably don't want to get married on a blind date. Start out slow. Take a safety course, test ride some bikes if you can, and invest in safety gear. Make sure that you have some fun too. There is a whole crowd out there that will call an 880 Sportster a "girl's bike". They are also known in some circles as ding dongs. No telling what they would call an XR-750. Stay away from ding dongs.

Chaos Saint

What is your experience with motorcycles? Did you grow up riding in the dirt or are you new to riding? If you grew up riding then you probably have the skillset to start on a lightning. Even with this experience, take the MSF course if you haven't already. If you are completely new to riding, take the advice to start small. Read the thumper section. Several people there are having alot of fun with the blast.

Also search these forums for 9m9knight. He was a young man who started on a lightning and was killed in a crash two weeks later this past november. Our advice to start small is to keep this from happening to you.

I think a link to our young soon to be Marine's (RIP) thread may be in order.

Gear is a must. All of the old farts on here telling you what to and not to do got to be old farts by being smart and or lucky. Either way I doubt you will find anyone on here with more than 10 years experience on two wheels that hasn't learned the hard way. Take their advise, they wouldn't have given it if they didn't KNOW it was sound. Just the fact that you came here looking for advise/ideas speaks volumns about you. You know what to do, now all you have to do is tell all your friends to suck-it and do what you want to do.

There is an old Navy saying. It goes like this: "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots." Good luck grasshopper!
