It seems as though there is a VERY slow tranny oil leak at the gear shift shaft. I have had the bike since last friday and have two drops on my garage floor (with a good bit of riding). I have the shop manual, but am new to Buell and doing my own bike service. Thanks |

Hook old seal and pull it out. (Don't gouge seal bore) Wrap splines with vinyl electrical tape (start wrapping on the smooth portion of the shaft, and work outwards) Slide new seal on over tape. Remove tape. Drive new seal in with 9/16" deepwell socket (I prefer Crapsman) Done! |

That'll do it. Make sure you don't gouge the bore or you'll be doing it again. May want to buy two seals so you have a spare and don't need to go to the dealer next time. |

Oils seals are standard. Get the number, preferably from somebody here and not the one you pulled. (The one you pull may have an unclear number and it needs replacing right away, better to already have the replacement in hand.) Buy best quality for better prices. Of course, that's old school. Buell seems to have excellent quality and prices so go with what the majority indicates. In any case, there's no need to wait for a back-ordered part. |

On a side note, take your old seal with you when you get your new one. There was a change somewhere, and there are now a couple of different sizes of shift shaft seal, and lots of parts people just grab the first one they see, because for years there was only one. |

I was trying to make it less complicated. Can you source seals elsewhere, of course, I do. Eastern Bearing for me. But since Seans' tranny is leaking I figured the dealer might be the best place. |

If you like tools like Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor and like your Snap-0n guy look at this. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/270653.html?1176307698 |

Do yourself a favor ans spray a bit of WD-40 or a type of lubricant on the tape you just wrapped on. It'll help in sliding the seal on. |

you guys are great. Thanks! The tool looks like a winner as well. Heck, I'm buying so much stuff since I bought the bike, the wife won't notice a tool thrown in.... |

How many times can you say, "shift shaft seal"? |
