+1. I love my Scorpion helmet. Absolutely neutral in airflow at any speed.

I did a lot of research on the Scorpions, found out they were wind tunnel tested for Bobby Rahal (sp?) to use in the Indy races.

The 400 have a better head protection #'s as opposed to the 700, but the 700 out performs it in the weight/drag #'s

I have both a 400 & 700. Love em!

I had the exact same situation.
I went from a XL to a L
The difference is night and day isn't it?

Oh yea, do like I did and put your old helmet in the classifieds and get some of your money back out of it.

glad to hear you made a life saving choice.

you think it's quiet now jaydub, go get a pair of earplugs. run at highway speed for 30 minutes, pull over and remove the ear plugs. now ride home and see how long it takes you to pull over again to put them back in.

i like those graphics. wait til you see all the bugs you have to clean off that thing this summer, wondering how that wasp would've felt hitting your face at 75 mph.

Was Schuberth the first to make wind tunnel tested helmets? I remember how smooth my old BMW System II helmet (with the golf ball bumps) was in the wind... no buffeting at all.

My latest C2 helmet is just as turbulence free. Most new helmets are now coming with a more aerodynamic shape. Surprisingly, Arai is still basically spherical. You'd think a helmet that brags about being the best constructed helmet available would get with the program, wouldn't you?

I have the C2. Changing to that from my starter HJC really quieted things down. The little spoiler/wing on the back is supposed to help, but I think it's mostly the stretchy collar that fits around your neck that cuts down on wind noise.

True... the collar silences the helmet... but the spoiler is what affects the airflow and prevents your head from bobbing around in the wind.

You can have a helmet that doesn't bob around much but is still noisier than hell inside. The original Schuberth Concept helmet comes to mind...

I have an EXO-400.... Love the helmet. little turbulence @ interstate speeds. The vents don't really work though. It's like they are always open regardless of the setting, which is fine by me.

+13 on the scorpion. It made a huge difference on highways. Reasonably priced, and really comfortable helmets.

don't buy a Bell, they're loud and uncomfortable! Does anyone know if a 5" taller screen for a lightning will make much difference on the highway? I'm being beat to death!

Also, my lightning wobbles side to side as if it's thinking of starting a "tank-slap" when i hit 80mph highway turbulence. Is this normal?

krueger, make sure you don't have a death grip on the bars and keep your arms and shoulders loose. also, make sure your suspension is set up properly for your weight and your steering head bearing is torqued properly.

american sport bike has a windscreen 4.5 inches taller. check it out at.....

how are they as far as lifting up at speed. my bell feels like it would come off if it wasn't strapped on.

I have an older EXO-400, and have always hated it. The road/wind noise makes me go deaf! It seems like it amplifies noise almost. If I don't wear earplugs, I'll be deaf for about 30 minutes after each ride. It also has poor padding, I can't tell when the vents are opened or closed, and it leaks water through the top of the visor inside the helmet. It has always felt stable at high speeds at least.

Are these just characteristics of the older model? This was new in April 2006.

I was looking at a Shoei XEleven, Z1R or the new Bell Star. All seem to be wind tunnel developed, much quieter noise and better padding (according to their spec sheets anyway). I have an odd shaped head, so am looking for softer padding, along with a specific shape. KBC, HJC, Arai, and all the Shoei (except X11) just don't fit my egg well.

So what am I missing here? Am I expecting too much out of a helmet, and should I just stick with my ol' EXO400?

My EXO-700 is fairly noisy, but never noticed the wind unless I turn sideways. As posted above, vents are useless, since the Scorpions are so drafty anyway (I think the draftiness is the cause of all the noise!).

The 400's have better crash numbers than 700's? Never heard of that... can someone post a link?

I love my Nolan n-com N-102 modular. No buffeting, even at high speed. Blue tooth is pretty nice, too.

Swordsman, I will see what I can pull up. The writeup was on a comparison with the ZR1.

Hddlh,
I was riding with a HJC CL12 and this lid would try to pull my head off over 75mph. The Exo400 & 700 both actually seat further down on my head at spead, but I did notice that the chin bar will start to close the gap and with the slightes adjustment of my jaw I can touch the chinbar.
The only buffeting at speed I get is when I am behind a Big Rig and then the whole bike will shuffle around.

I am a daily commuter with speeds of 80-95 on super slab. I really like the helmet. WHen the nose cover and chin collar are on and the temps start climbing, I can feel the vents working. Usally I am in traffic, stop and go and then when I break out of it and pick up speed you can really feel the cooling on the top of your skull.

My 2 cents

Yeah HDDID, the strap ride's my throat and the continuous howl of the wind almost drowns out the Harley sound I paid for! Too bad helmets aren't returnable!

I bought the EXO-1000 a few months ago for the drop down visor...what a disappointment! Looks cool...but a little heavy and very loud. I'm back to my RF-1000.

ear plugs do wonders for wind noise.

stang, i almost bought that helmet, decided against it when every review i read said that the inner visor wasn't really all the functional (didn't come down far enough and wasn't very dark) and was rather heavy. i got a shark rsx, itchin to try it out.

I'm sold on the Scorpion Helmets as well..Have an EXO-700.
Scorpion sells this aeroskirt accessory for $7.95. You can find it on their website, click on street helmets and select accessories. It really cuts down on the wind inside the helmet and makes them much quieter.
Scorpion Aeroskirt

It just snaps into the bottom of the helmet under the chin.

Instead of the drop down inner visor, take your shield off and tape up the inside where you think it will block the sun without hindering visibility. Try it out at sunrise / set and adjust the tape as necessary. When you are happy with it, tape off the part you will be looking through. Remove the trial tape and rough up the part that WAS under the trial tape with steel-wool or fine emery. Get out the old rattle can black and do it to it. I've been doing this for years and it works great. If you don't rough up the shield the paint will be removable for future sale or whatever.
