Anyone removed the gear cover on a 12R? I have on 07' so it's the... I'm not sure what you call that color. I'd like it to be black, sooooo, I was looking through my Firebolt bible (also known as a service manual) and it says I have to pull the cylinder heads and all kinds of extra stuff. I don't want to mess with anything, I just want to paint or powder coat this cover and the primary cover black. Seems like I shouldn't have to do all that stuff the manual says. Anyway, has anyone done this? Did you paint or powder coat? Why?

You need to pull the rocker boxes off to relieve the tension on the cams from the valve train. The gear case cover supports the outer shafts of the cams, so if you don't relieve the tension, you may damage the inner bronze cam bushings when the gear case cover comes off. Do it by the book. You don't need to remove the heads, just the rocker boxes.

I've heard of some doing it just removing one rocker box and then rotating the crankshaft so that the other cylinder is at TDC on the firing stroke.

What No_Rice said.
Just paint it with some wrinkle black while it is on the bike.

As long as we're talking about this... I too have to remove the cam cover, so I can replace it. It looks like a previous owner laid down the bike and knocked off most of the lip around the ignition cover (the disk) so the cover is dangling by one loose screw. People keep pointing it out to me. So I got a used cam cover to replace it with.

Anyway, it looks like it would be a lot easier to remove the rocker boxes with the airbox base out of the way. But in the past I've never been able to get the base off. I can't get it over the plastic trumpet that goes into the throttle body, and I also can't get the breather hoses out. Is there a secret, or do I just need to force it?

I also need to replace the dented header, so I figure I'll do both at the same time.

Thanks guys. Sure wish it were easier to get that cover off. Well, not like I'm doing a lot of riding this time of year anyway. I know I'm too picky to try and paint it with it still on the bike. There's just no way I could get the bolt holes to be perfect without taking all the bolts out and that sounds like a bad idea unless I do remove the rocker boxes and then I may as well remove the cover. I'll go take a look and post pics after I get it figured out.
