switched from trip od (for fuel watch) to regular od the other day, bike is less than 200 miles from 5k service. where have the miles gone? i haven't been more than 50 miles from home on the thing, and it had 3300 miles on it just over two months ago when i got it. anyway, southeast hd/buell is my closest dealer, and gonna give them a shot with this service. any of you ohio buellers have any exp with these guys? also, what kind of money do dealers usually charge for a 55 service. i'm also ordering a drummer muffler soon, any ideas what they may charge for this? thanks in advance, this site has me terrified of hd service shops.

Get the Service Manual for your bike, and do the service yourself.
You'll know it got done right as well as save $$.

Yup buy the manual, these bikes are very easy to work on.

OR You could:

Go the the dealer and drop it off (for a long time) and be prepared to bend over, smile, and hand them your wallet for totally messing your bike up...

I don't get why they have such a hard time...

i got the service manual, few issues tho. first, i'm not that mechanically inclined.
second, i have next to no tools. (stolen from a friends garage, along with some of his stuff)
third, no where to work on it. barely enough room to park my bike in moms garage thanks to sis's crap being stored in there. the apt i currently share with the GF has no garage, that's one of the reasons we're bailing out of there.
lastly, i work 55-70 hrs a week, and i'd rather be ridin than wrenchin on the limited time i do have off.

The best money you can spend in a dealership is buying the Service Manual.

Our sponsors will be happy to help get one.

Ashame your not a little closer....I would not mind coming up and giving you a hand. I did mine in an afternoon. Unhurried. mowed the yard chased the kid around the yard on his three wheeler.

Really just do it your self. I don't think you will have 30 bucks in the whole procedure. the dealer is gonna get ya for a couple of hundred.

You can install the Drummer yourself.
I'm mechanical challenged and I managed to do it myself. Its been on there for nearly 3k miles and I have not come across any side effects.

as far as service...
(Buell Dealer support will have major influence. )
I'm on the other side of the fence. I don't own any tools and just don't have the desire to do that kind of work. Danbury Buell/HD gives the Buells great support and I trust them with my bike. They also offer a yearly unlimited service plan. All scheduled maintenance plus oil changes every 2.5k miles. They will even come pick up the bike and drop it off back home when its done.

I jumped all over it and right now, they just completed my 5k service.

I can't wait to get back on!

BLF,

Look at it this way. You only need a flat spot and a few tools to do 90% of the service work yourself. You will spend more time dropping your bike off, waiting, and picking it up than you would if you did the work yourself. You will need a torque wrench, T27 torx bit set, standard allen wrenches set, an oil filter wrench, and a set of sockets and socket wrench. (I'm assuming you have a screwdriver or two already.)

Really. There aren't many specialized tools required and once you buy them, you have them.

I also understand the hesitancy to work on your own bike. The oil changes are very easy. The rest is pretty basic as well. I am mechanically inclined, but worry that I will screw something up and break my bike or kill myself. Luckily Chad takes mercy on me and helps me out. The folks here on BW are also a fantastic resource. People here have even posted detailed descriptions of the methodology for making a repair.

If there were ever a time to get your hands dirty and learn to work on your own bike, this is the bike to do it on. It is stone axe simple to work on and very difficult to really screw anything up.

I will be attempting (with Chad's help) to do the 10,000 mile service myself. The satisfaction of being able to do all the work yourself is worth the price of admission!

Called my dealer, quoted $260.00 for the complete 10,000 mile service and I supply the oil (Amsoil 20W50 V-Twin oil) for engine and primary. I also have an oil leak near my chin fairing. After waiting awhile the service manger says that this service calls for disassembly and reassembly of both front fork tube to replace the oil and seals and this will cost an ADDITIONAL $200.00 to $300.00 to the cost of the service. I can't afford a $460.00 to $560.00 bill so he suggests postponing the fork service to the 20,000 mile service because I ride very gently for the most part. My bill was $220.00.

With my newly service bike I head to central WV for a 390 mile ride and pull in the garage at 11:30PM. Next morning I go out to get the tail bag and under my chin fairing and there are two coke can sized puddles of oil with oil streaks down the right side of my chin fairing. I call for an appointment and the service writer says, "Possibly the service guy didn't clean up all the oil spilled during the 10,000 mile service oil change. I check my bike over to make sure there is no oil on the drive belt, rear disk brake, or the rear tire tread face. I go back for the second appointment. Service tech replaced a 90 degree fitting from oil line to engine and they billed me for $72.00. So how would you like paying for the same repair twice? Or how about the "roll the dice" price policy for the 10,000 service.

Get your quote in writing.

I agree with alot that was said above. Seems like the 5K service is easy to do. I am going to get the cable so that I can reset the TPS then all I will need the Hardley stealers for is the fork oil. I am not sure if it needs to be done at 10K or not, but I think I will get the springs swapped out with an 07 set. I am not an aggressive rider.

I've only paid for the 5K service. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

I've done every service after that myself. The bike has over 17K on it now.

At first I told myself "it's a new bike and I want the "professionals" to look at it and tell me if there's something wrong" Well come to find out that I'm waaaaaay more of a professional then the morons over at my local HD. Shit my seven year old nephew could do a better job than them.

I've looked over everything included in the 5k and 10k service. I can do all of it as "my dads a tv repair man, he's got a killer set of tools" and I'm not afraid of it. BUT what to do about the TPS reset?? Just take it in after the service and have them perform that. I know I can buy the tool and do it myself but it seems a bit unreasonable to buy that specialty tool for a job I may only do 2 or 3 times in the bikes lifetime with me.

BTW PSO fork oil is not hard to change. If you have a front end stand and a small amount of ingenuity you can them yourself also.

Randy,

I've had my TPS and idle checked at least 5 times in 12,000 miles. It's just good to verify that it is where it needs to be. I don't know why it would change, but each time it was a little off. Some have no change at all when they check theirs.

I think you'll use it more than 2 or 3 times. The problem I've seen is that HD dealers rarely get the TPS/idle reset done correctly. Usually you end up with the idle set to Sporty specs at the dealership. Rarely is the TPS Reset/Idle Reset done at proper operating temperatures. As a result, it ends up worse than it was before they started.

I've had great success at my servicing dealership and wouldn't hesitate to use them again. They haven't screwed anything up. I can't say enough good about Bumpus HD.

The only reason I wouldn't use them is that I want to learn to do the work myself, and I need to do my 10,000 mile service right in the middle of peak season and they can't get to my bike for 4 weeks.

I'm sure that you can find someone in your area that can do a TPS reset. I remember a while back that there was a list of folks that would do it for free. Check the RAN for folks in your area that can do TPS resets and send them a PM.

Most of the stuff for the 5K is just checking to make sure it doesn't need adjusting. These bikes are really easy to work on, I have always wondered why the HD techs have such a hard time working on them????????

Good luck with the dealer. The 5K is basically an oil change and a good inspection of everything. Maybe the Brake Fluid too, but the dealer probably wouldn't bother.

My bike is long out of warranty, so if/when I need something done that I can't or don't care to do my self - I'll be finding a independant shop to do business with, hopefully one that specializes in british and other european bikes. I wouldn't take it to an asian squid cave.

wow man i'd really appreciate it. 5k service looks like engine and primary oil, then just inspections and adjustments like primary chain and clutch (stuff i don't even know what i'm looking for) plus i got my ebay stock muffler coming to send to drummer that i'd like to do at the same time while it's down. i"ll let you know when i'm ready to go, see if we can get our schedules lined up. again, i really appreciate that.
