The two Drummer covers were made by Mike Norris as well. Kevin sells them, if that's the style you want. http://www.kdfab.com/Accessories.htm

Mine is custom made : )

Hmmm. I don't have to have one from Harley and the custom stuff is always cool. I would be really happy if it didn't day HD at all. There I go asking too much again.

As far as I know they come with everything you need.
You'll need to remove the riveted plate, and the plate it's riveted to.
The new cover screws right on.

Does anyone know why it is riveted in the first place? I am just baffled as to why HD would make an unservicable plate, unless you own a tap and die kit or a rivet gun. I can't figure it out, it just seems so stupid.

PS, I was so annoyed by it when rebuilding my engine I just tapped it for some 1/4-20 lawnmower flathead screws that I had handy. It looks like shit, and I hope someone asks me why.

There are several good reasons to rivet the timing cover.

1. It keeps the stupid customers out of their bikes timing.
2. It keeps the stupid Harley mechanics out of their customers bikes timing.
3. It is cheap.
4. It clearly demonstrates the contempt that the Motor Company has for its customer/victims.
5. It increases the sales of aftermarket timing covers as the rivets vibrate off.

LOL

Jon, thank you for solving the mystery for me. I feel much better now. The part about the mechanics was the best.

Now please explain the four pound, 1/4 inch thick locking plate on the mainshaft pulley and the lack of any locking mechanism on the crank nut.

I'd like to know what they were thinking on the crank nut too. I've already been into my primary twice so far to retighten it.

Tx05xb12s:

I had to buy a $250 torque wrench for that nut. I slathered it in red loctite too. It will probably take a 10 foot cheater bar to get it off, or possible just normal engine vibrations. Only time will tell...
