curious, once the fuel light comes on and the fuel counter starts counting obviously we are now using the reserve.....does anyone know the AVERAGE amount of miles you can go on that reserve BEFORE you totally run out??

There is no reserve per se.

There is a sensor in the tank (part of the fuel pump assembly) that controls the
fuel counter and light. The relative setting can vary from bike to bike.

I think the average is around 3/4 (.7) gallon. Most people have reported getting
35 miles or so max on the counter before being Empty. I don't push it that far myself.

Neither do I. Once it starts counting Final (or fuel light) I make my way to the nearest fuel station.

I went 44 miles on mine one night and I ended up costing into a gas station for the last 100 ft because I ran out.

I have travelled slightly over 60 miles with the fuel light on. It was cold and dark out, and that Chevron station was a welcome sight I can tell you. I proceeded to fill the tank with 3.7 gallons of gas. Doesn't get much closer than that, although I didn't stall out. I wonder how much farther I would have made it...?

By the way, nowadays when I take a trip, I carry not only a quart of oil, but a quart of gas as well. I just use an oil bottle after I rinse it with gas a couple times first. That quart can take me upwards of 15 miles, so it's a little peace of mind... just a little.

i am trekking from calgary alberta - nr. banff - to cali for motogp tomorrow nite ... i have borowed a tank bag & am carrying a gallon jug on the tank for insurance.

never run out, but coasted in northern AZ for too long on a rented fatboy in the night, in the desert cold after seeing low fuel light abt 30 miles from nearest mega-station .. needless to say, i was happy to see THAT joint & stayed a whiles! ;)

I usually go about 25-30 miles before I'm getting anxious to find a gas station. I've made it 54 miles once, but that was all highway cruising. It took 3.412G to fill it that time, about 1/5th of a gallon more than I'd ever previously (or since) put it in. Haven't run it out of gas...yet.

I have a camp fuel bottle that I'll carry if I go on long road trips, it holds 32oz or so.
The peace of mind will be worth far more than the cost of that bottle.

35 miles on reserve and only 3.9 into the tank. Consistent 52-57 MPG on a ULY. 200 miles on a tank is not a problem even when riding 2 up with full luggage.

I average 25-32 miles with the light on in city traffic. I've coasted into a couple of gas stations.

I've been up to 32 miles on reserve. A very nerve racking experience when you are in an unfamiliar area and don't know where the next exit or gas pump is at.

I ran out of gas at 33 miles about a 1/4 mile from a gas station on a busy intersection. Had to wait for gas to be brought to me.
