As I have said before, I love my bike but that darn 03" belt is garbage and IMHO not safe and should be a recall item.

I am more nervous about blowing a belt pulling hard out of a turn than I am about oncoming cars or dirt in the road. I can not wait to have the cash to change the setup to an 04" belt.

There are to many cases of 03" belts snapping before 12,000 miles to argue with me on this one.

My only gripe with the bike. So don't flame me to hard on this next one. Hey BMC how about tossing some of that XBRR cash at us 03' owners? I would be happy to split the cost with you guys!

There is a newer belt that will fit the 03 models that is much stronger than the original. The 04 belt broke on me at 7K, so I switched over to the 06 belt. I've got another 3K on the new belt and it isn't showing any signs of wear. Yeags, go to the appleton site in the sponsors page and Dave will get you the latest 03 belt, or you can talk to him and Al at American Sport Bike about getting the 04 conversion with the 06 belt.

Olinxb12r,

I have to say it chaps my hide to have to spend hundreds of dollars for the upgrade. To make it even worse I was sold an old (2 now) style belt without any mention of the upgrade by my local POS t-shirt and chaps dealer. When this belt breaks prematurly I am throwing it through Quaids window. Gonna write a nice note on the brick................

Wish I had found this board first. Being fiscally challenged makes the belt issue significantly painful. I am awaiting another night spent on the side of the darn freeway. Last time it broke I was in the middle of nowhere.

I understand your pain Skyguy. I was lucky enough to find a dealership in Topeka KS that was willing to give me the 06 belt under warranty. The dealership here in KC was giving me the run around and Topeka was willing to hook me up with out a bunch of BS and it isn't far away. The guy in Topeka was like, why would they try to give you another 04 belt when it has been discontinued and it is obviously not strong enough for my riding style if it broke at 7K. I would be pissed if I had an 03 too!

My POS (Quaid of Loma Linda) local dealer would not warranty the first belt even though I had less than 6,000 miles on it. I gotta go find a brick...............

I changed the belt at 10k per the manuals recommendations and Stone Mountain HD hooked me up with the new 04 upgraded belt. So far so good.

kdan, did they also swap pulleys? the 04+ belts have a differnt tooth pitch than the 03s.

The other option is always a chain drive. I know Trojan sells a conversion kit for a pretty
reasonable price for what you get. 3rd from the bottom on their drivline list.
http://www.trojan-horse.co.uk/ (the board is not allowing me to post a link to the product)
Hal's has theirs (I have one on my bike) too.
http://halspa.com/PartDetail.asp?P=634
for comparison.

I know it's not as light as a belt, or as clean, but the chain very rarely breaks and leaves
you stranded. Plus you can change gear ratios. Want better gas mileage? gear it taller.
Want to wheelie all day long? gear it shorter.

Just throwing another option into the mix.

DiabloBrian - No, I got the upgraded 04 belt for the 03. It's supposed to be better, but then I never had problems with the original 03 belt. Just for the record, I've not had a belt problem, but I did manage to break the locking nut thing and strip the inside teeth off of the drive pulley...That's when I decided to replace the belt.

Kdan, the reason Brian was asking is if you switched out the pulleys to put on the 04 belt is because the 04 belt is a different pattern than the 03. If you didn't switch the pulleys you still have the 03 configuration, but it is an updated version of the belt. If you look at an 03 vs. an 04 they are very different belts. On the other hand the 04 vs. the 06 have an identical teeth pattern, but the 06 is thicker and seems to be a lot stiffer. Does that clear it up?

Will the pulley's off of an X-1 or old 'S-?' model fit on the XB's?
I am on belt #4 in 22,000 miles. Getting kinda F'n ridiculous. BMC never even bothered to tell those of us with 03 models that something new was available, I found out here.

"No, I got the upgraded 04 belt for the 03"

It sounded like you were saying it was an 04 belt, which it is not.
