I need a 2nd bike....

I want my XB12 for ripping, and some longish tours, but I also want a Long Hauler....

I need some advice. I want a bike that will be comfortable for cross country runs. A bike that doesnt have a crazy far reach to the bars (or to the ground) Im 5'5. Hmmm...I would like a nice windshield, and maybe even a stereo for tunes along the way....

The bike does not have to be HD or Buell. The bike does not have to be current. Hmmm, and the less expensive the better....this is just going to be used for going straight, and going far.

any suggestions?

Cheers,

Jack

Sounds like you need a good used goldwing. Some of the 1500 gl's can be had for about 3 grand or so.But really, who wants to ride the straight and narrow?

BMW has many good choices for touring. Older, high mileage examples can be had pretty cheap. As long as they have been maintained correctly they will last a long time. I would ask for maintenance records.

Kawi Concours. Good, reliable, long-haul comfort that can be had for a song........

Tpoppa,

I like the Older beemers, but they dont look to comfortable with those straight seats....they must ride better than they look.

FI_Billy, isnt the concourse a pretty huge bike? whats the reach to the bars like?

Just a suggestions but maybe the XB12X? I say this because it has hard bags for it and it might be comfortable. Have to wait for a test ride for that.

Triumph Sprint ST. More like the old interceptor than the new interceptor. They really killed that thing when they dumped the gear driven cams for the VTec heads.

Hi Jack. Not sure about the reach, but I was able to find this (2004 specs):

Dimensions:
Length: 90.2 in.
Seat Height: 31.1 in.
Rake and Trail: 28.5 degrees / 4.8 in.
Wheelbase: 61.2 in.
Weight: 595 lbs. dry
Fuel Capacity: 7.5 gals.
Miscellaneous:
Colors: Pearl Mystic Black/Pearl Chateau Gray
Price: $8199
Warranty: NA

So, she's not a little thing, but not too big either and with 7.5 gallons of fuel and a brand new price tag of just over $8k, I think you could real far on a Connie! Good luck with your search.

Long Distance and short rider are pretty much limited to one of the Harley models. The BMW 1200C in one of its various iterations would also be good, not a two up mount, lack of rear suspension really punishes passenger. Reasonably priced used and they are bulletproof with routine maintenance.

Short hot chicks on Harely softtails seem to always sidetrack me so I assume anyone short could ride them across country.

I have an 03' BMW R1200CL, the big luxury cruiser. It is one sweet ride. I needed a bike that was family friendly. Every body who rides with me absolutly loves it. It's a different sort of bike. An odd duck. I'm really growing to like it. Going off touring with my boy again this weekend. You can get them with a few thousand miles for abour 10K. Still under warranty. Course' the 12X wasn't out when I bought it.

Hi,

How about a Ural? It's a BMW made in Russia. It's low dollars for a new bike and from what I have heard, stone ax reliable. Plus if your going in a straight line, get one with a side hack. Get a dog to ride in the hack and your golden.

OK, so some of my ideas aren't as good as others... lol

Ural is a 750cc bike that will only do 75 mph. Not a good choice, but cool looking.

The real thing is a much better choice. The K 1200 LT is the way to go touring. And I think you can get .9 % financing. It cheaper to finance than to pay cash at that rate.

How about a Yamaha FJ1300 with a MP3 player for the tunes...

I too was a big VFR fan till they ruined it with VTEC. Test rode the new Triumph ST ...was very impressed... A better VFR than the VFR

Must be true. I was behind you on Sat, and your son had a big smile on his face every time he turned around.

I'm going to have to second the Kawasaki Concours. Do a search for my earlier dissertation on this bike. I will stand by my statement that you will not find a bike that gives you more for your money than the Connie.

Fast (12 sec 1/4 mile)
7.5 gallons = long haul
Reliable (been around for 20 years)
One of the greatest owners groups and forums www.concours.org

Kawi should be paying me for this.

Email me offline with any questions

That is an accurate statement. And, you've heard me say this before, I have NEVER seen a Concours ridden by a bad rider. I have had my handed to me, unexpectedly, twice by Concours riders.
