Like I've posted before my amber color is literally flaking off in chunks, I let the dealership know and the ordered me a new one. Before I get the new one I notice the same exact thing happening on the rear wheel. Both wheels have never been changed or fooled around with because the bike has just 2500mi. on it. Somebody posted something about the amber wheels being painted in China is this true? I also was basically told by Buell service that I must have hit something because they have never heard of that problem with the wheels. Which obviously is not the case because you can see where it is starting to bubble up. No dents or scratches. My dealer to much of my suprise took pics and said they will handle it. Way to go Duluth Harley Davidson, There Service dept. may no nothing about servicing Buells, but the sure have stepped up to the plate on this one. BristolXB said he had the same problem. I was looking for my previous thread but it's MIA.
any Suggestions,
thanks,
Rob S.

How bad should it get before you take it in and have the dealer handle it? I mean the last time I got my tires changed it looks as if some of the fished was chipped of. I mean its really not that big and I feel as if I'm being anal by have the dealership look into it.

This is one of the only bad things I have to say about Buell...the powder coat job (not sure if it's powder coat, but it looks like it to me) on the amber wheels is not good at all. I want to say horrible, but it's not...It's just not good.

Yeah, so they'll replace it with another wheel that has a bad powder coat job. It's just going to flake again. They need to do a better job with the powder coat. Would save them a lot of money to just do it right in the first place.

Hmmm... I've had mine for a year and a half so far and no peeling or flaking (until the Honda shop got a hold of it anyway). I wonder if the older powder coating place did a better job?

From what I have seen this is a rare occurance. The wheels are a vendor item and not powdercoated by Buell themselves. Like M1 my powdercoating has no issues, even at the couple of nicks from a hamfisted roadside tire change. Those nicks haven't spread at all and thats after power washing the outer rims (never near the bearings) to get the brake dust off that had gotten baked on.

I've not had a really good look at the 12 wheels for a while, but a few years back I had a GSXR custom sprayed and the wheels were done with a coating the painter & distributor was calling "color-chrome". This was not powder coating but a very expensive tinted lacquer. The painter did the job on purely an hourly basis so I organised all the materials and other work. One thing that had to be done to the wheels was they were completely pollished to an extremely high quality lustre. The wheel had to be coated quite soon after pollishing to reduce the chance of significant oxidisation of the alloy in the rims. Not too bigger issue since the pollishing was done next door to the paint shop. Anyway after the wheels had seen a little use the coating on the rear began flaking. We couldn't figure why till the rep for the coating was posted the wheel and told us the wheel had been coated too soon after cleaning with the prep solvent. Repollished and coated again with no problems.

Yeah, I'm not just talking about the flaking though. I've seen bad powder build up in the rims. Some of them have been worse than others. It's just a poor quality job. Looks like it was rushed and they didn't care about it.

I also agree that Buell probably outsourced the powder coating process. Regardless, they should be looking over the company and making sure the quality lives up to the Buell name.

They always did outsource the coating. Originally from a Wisconsin vendor noted for his QC and more recently they dropped the original vendor and went OffShore according to a fellow BadWebber that tried to get some coating done at the original Wisconsin vendors.

As always, you get what you pay for.

Hey, wasn't it last fall when some BWB'ers were complaining that when their black wheels peeled, the amber undercoat showed through?

If yes, then it looks like the returns of bad ambers are recycled into black. Either that or they are using amber primer. LOL
