Let me start by saying I have the service manual.
I am needing tires and wanted to read up on wheel removal tips and tricks.
I looked in the New Owners Info section, there was no such animal.

Be sure to line up the front caliper with the rim spokes. If you look at the back of the caliper, you'll see how it lines up. Don't forget to loosen the pinch bolt on the rear, like I did.

id recommend putting some painters tape or something similar over the front spoke that you line up with the grooves in the caliper. no matter how hard you try it will still rub together. this way it doesnt scratch the rim up.

If you are lazy and brave you can try this...

Open the rear caliper all the way so your pads and pistons are pushed all the way in. Tape up your back wheel.

You can twist and lift the rear wheel enough to get the rotor in the caliper without removing it.

May be easier the first time with another person to help.

I can confirm that works. Jdugger mentioned that last fall, but I couldn't get it to work then, now this morning I was getting aggravated with an axle threading problem, and in my aggravation I accidentally figured out how to do it.

I really need to create a video of me doing a wheel swap. There's a handful of easy gestures that once you get some practice with help tremendously.

The up-and-twist to pull the rear wheel is one, the foot-under-the wheel while threading the axle another, and so on.

On the front wheel, the best modification you can make is the longer front brake line. It makes a dramatic difference in the ease of getting that front wheel on and off.

There's definitely a 'knack' to the bikes and when you figure it out a lot of service tasks are really made easier.

I take my rear hugger off to make more room to pull the wheel up and around that rotor. Makes it much easier.

IMHO, sometimes it's just easier to do things the right way (ie removing the rear brake caliper with its two bolts) than struggling to get the wheel out in addition to the increased possibility of wheel damage.

And remember to loosen the rear pinch bolt, else it will be really, really hard to remove the axle.

DAMHIK.

Oh crap, that reminds me I forgot to put my pinch bolt back in. Well it hasn't fallen out in the last 40 miles, guess I'll retorque the axle and put the pinchbolt back in when I get home! : D

Yeah, you know you forget the pinch bolt after standing one the cheater bar--and the axle STILL isn't budging.

DAMHIK.

you dont even need to spread the brakes out. its very easy to swap the wheels out. i think matt(carparts009) and i swapped them out on my 1125r in somewhere around 4 minutes or something at blackhawk. with the bike sitting on wooden blocks and using hand tools. thats wasnt really even TRYING to be extremely quick about it.

just pulled the wheels off last night

it's super easy! the belt guards on the CR are way easier to get out of the way than the ones on my 03 spec XB9s

removed the rear brake caliper also.

easy peasy.

got new tires on the wheels last night but it was too late to get the wheels back on the bike. so here's hoping installing them is just as easy as removing them.

One tip: You don't need to remove the idler pulley the way the manual says (at least the Uly manual).
