Well, I am of the praying type as well but regardless of any of that, what really maters is that we all have you and your wife's best interest at heart. I believe all of us here do and I pray that both you and your wife recover quickly.

what kind of helmet , dot or snell , also what kind of clothing. Usually the passenger sufflers alot less than the driver in a bike accident.

I won't worry to much tough my brother in law t boned a car a light doing 70 mph right into the front fender of the car and well all thought he would be dead in a few days considering he was driving a full dresser screaming eagle harley with only boots jeans , leather vest and a cheap half helmet, they even had candle light viduals and brain , swelling massive internal and several lacerations. After being in the icu for 2 weeks, he woke from a coma and eventually got out of teh hospital and is about 95% recovered and back to normal. Even tough he has another harley he never rides it and has bought a convertable car to replace the bike.

I'm moving to vegas in the next few months and I am taking 3 bikes with me, I know driving in veags is really nuts with all the traffic and tourists and I am contemplating giving up the bikes and switching to a convertable.

I've been in about 6 bad accidents on bikes in my life and walked away from all of them. Co workers at my old company used to bet on if I would make it thru the month with out a crash due to the high speed and risks I would take driving. Fortunatley their bets never paid off, one worker said I must have been born with a golden horse shoe up my ass.

Statistically I am not sure that's correct...and it's often the case that pillions aren't as well protected as riders, especially as they're on the bikes less frequently so don't invest in all the gear. Not that I am suggesting that this is the case in this instance.

I was thinking about this a lot last night, I can't begin to imagine how hard it must be to be the rider when the pillion gets badly injured....it must be a horrible experience.

I ride like a complete girl when I have a pillion...that (in some way) compensates for my riding like a complete tw*t the rest of the time.

Any news on the prognosis yet?

I hope your wife recovers swiftly. I know it is terrifying to see your wife hit the road as it has happened to me once, caused not by a deer, but by a cager. Luckily mine had no major injuries. On one road I sometimes travel to work I've seen a deer on the side almost every day for the past week.

Well again thanks to all of you guys. I wanted to let everyone know we both were wearing our icon helmets. I had my icon leather jacket but my wife was wearing a cheap $40 pink textile jacket she that was cute. Tore right through it like butter. I tried to give her my gloves but the didn't want to wear them because it was so hot outside. Please make your passengers wear full GOOD gear. Don't make the mistake I made

From what I looked into icon helmets, it looks like they are not snell approved.

When a helmet doesn't meet snell standards, it barely
provides adequate head protection.

I know in early tests a helmet that meet DOT standards , would be peerced or penetrated during snell test standards.

After seeing these results I always buy only snell approved helmets.

Currently we have shoei helmets and I still have a early bell M2 racing helmet the same as the nascar racers use.

For the best safety a rider should only buy shoei or arai, they cost $250-$500, but your head needs the best protection.

Alot of guys will buy the best helmet for themselves and end up getting a cheap $50-$99 helmet for the passenger. This is wrong and can aome back to haunt you. So buy only the best for you and your passenger.

Even with thebest helmets to can still suffer alot of head trauma, my brother crashed on the interstate with a bell m2 racing helmet and the impact to his helmet cracked the whole top ridge of the helmet in 4 inch long crack. the impact put him in a coma for 8 hrs. but the helmet saved head and he walked out of the hospital the next day.

Nightripper: You're wrong and you're giving out bad info in a thread for someone's wife. Leave the proselytizing to your local street corner and perhaps do some more "research" into helmet standards.

the article states that the snell test is the hardest to pass and if you look at any catalog like tucker rocky, parts unlimited ,dennis kirk, you will see alot of helmets that only meet the dot standards.

If any of these dot approved helmets could pass the snell test then they would state it as an added selling factor.

Most of the helmets that pas the snell test are usually selling for the $300 -$500 retail price.

No professional racer or sanctioned track would allow a dot approved helmet for any real amatuer or professional event. Why do you think WERA and the AMA only allowed thelatest snell approved helmets.

Jake-
Sorry to hear about your situation. Don't forget to take care of yourself...remember to eat and try to get some sleep. You need to pace yourself.
I think I know what you are going through right now. 10 yrs. ago my wife spent a month in the ICU after being hit by a truck while on a bike ride. I practically lived in the ICU for the first few days, wandering around in a funk, not sleeping, not eating untill a friend brought me some food and made me eat. If your wife is in a chemically induced coma, it could be a long ride. Try not to get too up or too down with changes in her condition. There will be days when she will need you to be strong. Take care of yourself, I wish you the best.

One other thought...something that helped me through the ordeal was keeping a journal. I wrote down changes in condition, and what I was thinking and feeling. It sounds silly, but it helped.

About ten years ago the elders/parents of two of the guys we were riding with were following at their pace behind us. When we got to the next town we pulled over and waited, and waited. Finally we backtracked and found the accident scene roads closed by traffic, fire engines ambulances and cops not there yet.

wife had a 3/4 helmet so she got 5 hours of ER plastic reconstructive surgery on her cheekbone that night. Also a broken arm and collarbone. More surgeries after that. Darn deer crossed in front of them and knocked them down. There was deer hair between the front rim and the tire. At least one hour into the accident scene as I was pacing trying to stay out of the way, BANG-BANG-BANG-BANG. I spun around so fast when I heard that weapon go off. The cop capped the deer, it was struggling paralyzed in the ditch.

That F(*&ing deer was the last thing on my mind.

(sorry for typos my iPhone is jacked up) Hey guys thank you all for the positive/motivating post even though i don't know any of you guys on a personal level you'd be surprised how much your words help. My wife is doing better ever day and actually is going in for back surgery around 7 or so in the morning. After her surgery it's all down hill from then and all we got left is the recovery phase
On another note my bike is most likley totaled which is good because I don't plan on riding any time soon. I purchased gap coverage so I should be able to walk away from it. Has anybody ever recieved compesation for their gear? We lost nearly a grand between our helmets, jackets, phones, clothes, and shoes. I wouldn't plan on replacing them but I have been living in the hospital since the accident almost a week ago and I haven't been able to go to work. I got only see my wife four times a day for 40 minutes and I dont plan on missing a second!
Again I cant thank you guys enough for the support and if anybody has had any luck with my question would you please chim in.

Asuuming you have a full cover policy then that'll cover the loss up to a "fair market value" of the bike, the gap insurance will cover the difference between that and any outstanding finance... I'd guess that'll be especially useful for anyone who bought before the fire-sale.

I suspect the "incidentals" will differ dependant upon who you're insured with. In the UK most policies have an add-on for helmet and leathers cover which costs around $50 on top of the full cover price.

If you dig out the policty it'll tell you what you can claim, or maybe if you post the insurer on here someone can look on their site to see if they publish the T&C online and we can look for you while you concentrate on looking after your wife..

Hope the op goes well, thanks for the update.

Jake - I hope all went well with today's surgery.

As for gear coverage...when my husband totaled his Uly, they covered his damaged gear. I hope your insurance company will do the same for you. Living at a hospital is expensive.

As others have said, be sure to take care of yourself and allow friends and family to help you during this difficult time. After all, you'd do it for them, right?

Please keep us posted and lots of prayers coming your way.

What is your wife's name?

(again I prove read this and there is typos but my phone is still jacked) Hey I just wanted to update everyone on my wife's condition. BTW her name is Peggy but I call her Peggy Sue because she hates it and I have Farm Bureau insurance. She had her back surgery today. She actully broke a vertabra in half without severing her spinal cord. Well they fixed the top half of the vertabra to the vertabra above it and did the same with the bottom piece. They the grafted a part of her hip bone to fill the gap. Everything went perfect the Doc said. While I was visiting the Doc made her move her legs feet she had a little trouble understand but I think it was just the dope. I'm on cloud nine right now because I feel like after this it's all down hill and all that's left is the recovery. What I think is amazing is all this work only required two cuts from 3-4 inches! We are taking bets in the waiting room on how much this bill will be. I'm thinking like 1.3 mil or so lol. My out of pocket on my insurance is only 4k and I think my moto ins. will cover that
