How major is the coolant leak that comes from the water pump. It just started not sure how much lost yet. Stopped by HD shop to get it looked at. What else should I do?

Make sure they get the needle bearing, shaft and impeller ordered, along with all the required gaskets. Clutch cover, rear header gasket, water pump gasket and a bunch of orings and seals. I don't have the full parts list yet, but I should by sometime next week. Mine's broke. : (

Has anyone had a water pump fail or the seal fail catastrophically? I've not read about any.

Mine barely leaks any and not always.

K when I was telling service writer there wasn't any service bullentins about it so they want to look at it. Sounds like a lot of work involved, bummer

Yup, there's a bit of work on it. I think the manual says to rotate the motor, but there might be a way to do it without doing that. Dropping the swingarm out of the way would accomplish the same thing to get access to the rear header bolts. Pull the rear header, full access to the clutch cover is then available. It's still several hours of work either way.

I found this in another thread. I haven't had to have it done yet, but i've got the p/n just in case.

The kit is p/n R1022.1AM.

Parts list breakdown, tools first. Some of the tools are specific to installing the bearing or seal, so unless you've got them, doing it at home would be tougher to do.

B-49141-2 water pump oil seal installer
B-49141-3 water pump water seal installer
B-49141-4 water pump seal installer base tool
B-49196 water pump needle bearing installer

gasket (water pump housing)
impeller
rotary (water) seal
oil seal
needle bushing (bearing)
thrust washer
shaft assembly
gasket (clutch cover to crankcase)

mine let go completely at my last gas stop on the way home after a 3000 mile trip to the 08 indy moto gp. filled with gas, pushed it away from the pumps and went inside to use the bathroom. came out to find a giant puddle under the bike. poured water into the radiator to watch it come straight out of the weephole at the water pump. partner came and got me with the trailer. 3 weeks at the shop for warranty repair. no more issues on either 1125r, street or track.
best luck,
tim

Thanks for all the info, I guess I'm just gonna have to get it done. I think I've smelled coolant before while riding it but this time saw it, so better fix it. At least their a good dealership and like Buells, not backed up on work either.

Dktechguy112 -- That list looks familiar. : ) I just didn't have all the individual part numbers when I posted that. Actually, I still don't.

Mine was replaced last month. Looked like more than just an R&R of the water pump. Dealer had the bike for 8 days. Excellent dealer BTW in Folsom Ca.

One last note, there are ZERO impellers or shafts anywhere in the US at this time. None on HD-net anyway.

Dropped of bike at dealer to get water pump fixed. Part finally came in after being back ordered for 63 days. I'll report back after Wednesday when jobs finished.

i could use some help from someone who has installed a rotary seal recently... my issue is the rotary seal tool that I have has an "a" at the end of it. Now that I have pressed on the seal it seems that it is not on the pump gear all the way. Any help would be appreciated!
