FWIW the owner's manual says use SYN 3.

There's a 100 mile oil change service? I don't remember seeing that in the owners manual.

First scheduled change is at 1000 km or 621 (?) miles. The manual says if you have to add oil to the engine during break-in, use SYN 3, so I'd say if you change it earlier, the factory is telling you to use SYN 3.

There are many oils that are superior to, and cost less than H-D (mineral) and SYN3 (semi-synthetic). It would make sense to pay less and get more. Don't fall for the H-D marketing machine.

And no- using oil other than "H-D approved" will not void your warranty (it would violate Federal law for them to do so). Put in the good stuff- your bike will thank you.

I use the regular Rotella 15-40 @ 50 and 300 miles. Change filters too. The amount of shavings and sludge that come out are amazing. Syn 3 or whatever Syn, you want at 600 miles. YMMV...

No, right now you can only get filters at Harley dealers. Go to K&N's website and tell them you want them to make a filter for it.

You can also get filters from American Sportbike.

Scott,

Gotcha.. let us know what you find on the drain plug.

Are the oil filters really $20+ each? Holy cow... thats how HD is making up the money lost selling them at insane prices..

Scott,

I checked with several techs at several dealers and was not able to get a definite answer on which oil to use. Nobody seems to know for sure what comes in it from the factory. Most of the techs thought that it wasn't Syn3 *or* standard Harley dino.

I changed my oil at 300 miles and used Syn3. I'm not sure if that was the right thing to do, but the amount of metal shavings on the left side plug was about the same at both oil changes.

I got mine for $14.95 each, and I picked up 3 of them right off the bat. I have the first 12,000 miles covered for filters, although I'm almost to the 12k mark now.

They told me at the Dealer it was mineral from the factory.

Syn 3 is not full Synthetic, as many have posted, so you should be fine.

Rotella is a good choice as Cheddarheads4erik mentioned, and it is very inexpensive too, defeats the norm, "you get what you pay for".

These ads bring alot of light to motor oil.

The last article explains why Rotella and Good commercial-grade heavy-duty oil is a better choice.

It all works!
