I did the XB9 primary change on Saturday. I got to take it for a ride on the twisties yesterday. What a wonderful difference! It was so much more confidence inspiring. Wonderful smooth torque in really tight twisties: ) I used to ride a 2000 Aprilia Falco 1000 SL. I loved that tourquey Rotax motor. It was amazingly smooth. When I fantasized about a Buell it was with the same fantasies of smooth. I was disappointed and now I am not. Thanks to all here who have indirectly coaxed me and provided instruction for me to do this. I can't remember who each of you are, but I had the best ride ever on my Uly yesterday and I have carried it around in my head ever since. It's so exciting to be back! Thanks again.

Sure would of been nice had Buell given us a cassette tranny with a trap door. Then we could have just tried different gearing.

+1 on the XB9. A six speed would have been a nice touch.

Electraglider, If your so lazy that you can't even take the muffler off to paint it, where were you going to find the motivation to change the gearing?

Lazy guys are the biggest talkers.
I'd love to have a bit lower 1st without the requisite lower 5th. To be honest, I'm not so much lazy as I am cheap. It was the part about replacing torca clamps and muffler hose clamps that I couldn't abide.

To me it was the best performance mod I've done.

Don't know just why "smooth" is the word on the gear reduction but you nailed it. Smooth and powerful. Love it.

+1 on 'the Change' turning the Uly into the Buell you dreamed of. Now you see why we all say we wished we'd done it sooner.

Everyone else, try the Kool-Aid.

I rode a bike with it, tastes nasty and ruins the bike on the slab, and still comes nowhere near the acceleration of my 1125's. Nothing but downsides for my usage.

Slab...is that where there are no cops? Sure enhances the Uly acceleration without buying an 1125. Jeez Froggy!

It would seem to enhance around town riding but then take away from high speed droning mpg. I can't see how this could be a ++ but will agree that it is a +-. It surely must detract from miles per gallon on the highway since it would be like 4th gear all day. Too many compromises, you get but you give up so where is the net gain?

has anyone that has done the swap ever recorded before and after mpg? I don't get a difference if running in 4th or 5th at 60-65 mph...and my assumption is actually that you won't see a decrease in mpg. The only "negative" then would be less top speed, which I don't even touch with my Uly.

personally, I don't care about the mpg. I want better driveablility, and between this mod and rerouting my breather I am confident I will get there!

Well since buying the Uly awhile back the one thing I am missing is the gearing of my City-X. As far as the droning, I drove my X across the country. I had a drummer on my bike at that time. One day I went 869 miles. It sure was a great bike and I never felt bad about the gearing. The difference is that sometimes I would find myself wanting to shift one more time on the slab. Now on the Uly I often forget that I am running fourth and when I shift into 5th I often "feel" like the bike is running at low rpms or a "false sense of lugging" because of my conditioned response of the city-x's gearing. Next fall I will attempt the switch...

It's not like riding around in 4th gear all day. My mpg didn't change at all. I love it. I guess if your somewhere you can ride at 85 mph all the time you wouldn't want it.

"My mpg didn't change at all"

That was my suspicion. All of the benefit, no drawback. Saweet.

I checked my mileage riding the superslab back from HC and found no change whatsoever in mileage from before the swap.

As for Froggy's comment, I don't know what to say except that the comparison of a Uly to an 1125 is similar to that of a WRX to a Skyline--different animals altogether.

I don't ride a motorcycle for mpg. It is a nice side benefit, but I ride for how good it makes me feel. There is not one fun thing about riding on the freeway for me. I love the twisties. The tighter the better. I love the roller coaster ups and downs and centifugal force in the turns. I love being scared and conquering the fear. I love the feeling of a tight smooth run on my favorite road. I would take a lot worse mileage for the feeling I got on Sunday during and after my XB9 primary maiden voyage.

Thanks Iliad for reminding me why I love riding, and why I love riding Buell! Needed that today.

+1 Rider2898 That was poetry. A Uly with some muscle...smooooth muscle. Just came in from a beautiful back country ride through the gorgeous Skagit Valley, Samish Island and Chuckanut Drive...cutting through the windy back roads...overlooking Puget Sound and the green farm fields...mileage? I pay no attention.

I think around the valley here mileage would be the same but out on the highway I suppose equal speeds will be a little higher rpm...but we can lug these things which wrecks mileage. I find myself dropping back a gear often enough with wind and hills anyway to keep revs up. Revs are fine with XB9 at 10 to 20+ over speed limits...which is what motorcycles like ours like to do. Not a racer. Just like what Iliad likes too. Will be doing a 4K next month through the Cascades and Rockies...no freeways barf. Should be a gasser.

No mileage change for me either. 45-50, same as before. Unless I go into higher elevation then it goes up but now I have more pull out of the corners with the lower gearing. I wouldn't even think about going back.

I did this change withing a couple of months of having my Uly and it is still the single best mod I have performed.

Better in the twisties, MUCH better in dirt, and I couldn't care less about the slab anyway.

I have only seen primary gearing increase kits on American Sport Bike for the XB9. What parts do I need to do a gearing reduction and where can I get them?
