Weird thing happening, key on , switch on, in gear, clutch in, not start.

Put it in neutral starts. Three times today.

Any ideas.

I would actually prefer that it doesn't start in gear however I know that it should.

I'm a little worried that next time it won't start at all.

Neutral switch indicator. I think its a 10 or 15 dollar part.

that's my guess

My bike hasn't been able to start in gear since my son dropped it a couple of years ago. The plunger is there and goes in and out but it needs neutral to start. Hasn't been a problem for me. Maybe I'll take another crack at it and figure it out.

Is there a switch in the clutch lever?

I'm not even sure, because I never do it, but... would these bikes start without pulling in the clutch if they're in gear? If not I'd say the clutch 'safety switch' (if there is one)is bad. Harleys used to use a magnet in a piece of plastic inside the clutch lever at the bars with the switch dangling underneath. I remember they needed to see that the clutch was pulled in OR the tranny was in neutral. Some one out there knows... chime in.

right out of the 07 owners manual (from link above)

Buell motorcycles feature a starter interlock. Before starting the engine, all the following conditions must be met.

* Engine OFF/RUN switch on right handlebar control group must be in the ON position.
* Clutch lever must be applied (pulled-in) before starting motorcycle in gear. Note that it is not necessary to apply clutch lever before starting the vehicle in neutral

I believe there is a switch in the clutch lever assembly. I had the same problem after I took a spill.

Don't remember if I replaced it or fixed it during the broken lever repair.

Well heck, my bike has never been able to start in gear with the clutch pulled in. I always thought it was a feature. Never figured it to be something wrong, until now.

Sheesh!! Something else to repair.
