First let me say there aren't many places to ride a bike off road on Long Island legally, but I tested the limits (legal) today. I found some dirt roads through Manorville Long Island. Apparntely, these roads are only accesible to hunters in 4x4's but they were fun roads. I explored them for a while, to see how my Uly handled some light off road shenanigans. It actually surprised me, Obviously through deep sand it was NOT fun, but I kept my weight back, and the power on, and I didn't go down. Next nightmare was some of the puddles......40 feet long, 20 feet wide, not sure of depth. At first I chickened out and went through the woods and around, but when I returned I figured "What am I afraid of? A little wetness?" So I plowed through, at first water was tolerable, than it came over my boots, I musta slid into a rut from the 4x4's. No big deal, bike plowed right through! The bike made it up certain tricky spots, and down, and didn't get me stuck anywhere, I was very pleasantly surpirised at it's agility. Now I know it's not gonna run the BAJA 1000 but it was fun to take it off the normal path. I ride it almost everyday to work, get almost 50 miles to the gallon, took it on a saddlesore 1000 in 21 and 1/2 hours straight, then to feel like a kid again riding some trails trough the woods, what else could I ask from this bike?

Which brings up a question. Has anyone done an extended off road trip on the Ulysses? I have two major ones in mind next summer. The TAT and the Continental Divide.

I've seen the tires Ulendo has on his Buell, and the look adequate for the occasion. I think the bike could make it. Anyone done those rides on a Uly yet?}

Baja 1000 : )

I am leaving Monday to go race in it next week, although in a truck and not a bike.

Glad you got a taste of the Uly off-road. I imagine that will be my next bike.

Good Luck in Baja, Thespive. I can't stop looking at the sportster on your bio page. Awesome looking bike. It looks familiar. Was it in Hot Bike magazine a while back?

TAT - Trans America Trail. It starts in Tennessee and ends in Oregon. I want to ride to the other side of Oklahoma on it.

I've got to have something to look forward to other than a monthly paying of the bills.

The Uly would be perfect for the beginning of the TransAmericaTrail, say from Tennessee through most of Oklahoma. The first three or 4 states are easy, like a Sunday drive in the country, but the second half would be a different story. Google it for tons of ride reports. I am sure you could do it, but it would be a pain in the butt, not to mention arms and back and legs. I have ridden the TAT through Tennessee, Missouri, and Arkansas, on a Husqvarna.
I have not ridden the Continental Divide trail, but from my research (I am also thinking about riding the Continental Divide trail this coming year) I don't think the Uly is the right bike for this trip.
Prove me wrong. That would be cool!
In my opinion, it comes down to what your frustration and pain thresholds are.

A good way of testing whether or not it's a good idea would be to tag along with some of the dualsport riders in your area for a day, on some local trails. It would be interesting to read your report after following around a bunch of KLR 650's, DR 650's, XL 650's, through some trail.

I have been waiting and waiting to see some cool offroading pics of a Uly, but tire selection seems to be severely limiting this.

Props to the guy with the City X and the weird sized, almost off road tires on it.
He had some cool stories and photos.
