I have the shallow lids for my S2/S3 bags and really like them. That's what I use for solo touring. Something similar should be possible with the H&B bags.

From what I’ve figured out, Buell has about 80~90% of the parts needed for a nice sport-tourer sitting on the shelves. Start off with the XB12Ss and put the Uly tail section and seat on it. Mount a Firebolt fairing on the other end. (Which could even free up even more room under the seat.) It would take a different saddlebag bracket to hold the sidecases since the Uly’s bracket mounts down to the lower Uly frame, but that’s not too difficult. The topcase mount would probably work as is. Then, PLEASE either sell the sidecase bracket by itself OR offer the Hepco Becker Junior bags as an option for those of us who don’t want a freakin' gigantic 40” wide motorcycle.
If Buell wanted to be really nice to us they’d shape up a new fairing to mount to the existing Firebolt fairing stay that was larger with a larger windscreen. Seems pretty straightforward and certainly doesn't look bad...
I’m planning on buying a replacement for my S3 next spring and right now the FJ is my number one choice. I’ve figured out that I can build my own Buell sports-tourer by swapping out parts as I outlined above, but the cost to do it all makes it a questionable exercise. To build the above bike would cost as much as the FJ, yet the FJ comes already assembled and adds better wind protection, an adjustable windshield, available heated grips, a centerstand, 50 more horsepower and 6.6 gallons of fuel capacity. It’s tough to argue with all that... |

I like that idea bill. Everything you mentioned would make me trade up.
The FJ was my other choice before the Uly
but is to cramped for me. The Uly was the only
bike Ive sat on that doesnt make feel like a sardine!! |

Well the CityX is just as comfortable to me as the Uly. BUT, I like the 12 engine, hard bags, larger gas tank, and my passenger likes the rear seat of the Uly.
Those other "Sport Touring" bikes seem like high speed boats to me. Not what I have in mind! Drop one and you are talking about $4000+ to replace all that plastic!
Look out Mr. Buell, a new Tiger is hitting town to stir things up! God, I love this time in bike history. |

I went into more detail on the Quick Board version of this thread but I was looking for that Sport Tourer before the Uly. An S4 as I called it. I rode and liked the Uly and at 5'7" I am not tall. So now a year later I have put over 14,000 miles, up to 720 miles in fourteen hours with no problems. I would like to see a more traditional Sport Tourer for those who do not like the Uly. |

10-4. Uly is what a friend of mine and I designed at a bar on a napkin 30 years ago. Thanks Erik, for building the Ulysses for we lacked the technology and were too lazy to build it ourselves. If Buell made a sport tourer I won't be trading mine, I have what I want. Just looking for some accessories. |

I think if you want a sport tourer, you should go buy one. The Uly serves a broader range of riding activities. That has been and will continue to be the key to its overwhelming popularity. Erik got it right with this one. Sport-touring dedicated bikes do not sell in large enough numbers for Buell to make them work in their product mix. |

Etennuly, can you be more specific about the accessories your looking for.
I somewhat share your view. My requirement could be met with better wind/weather protection for distance riding but protection that could be removed easily for playing in the dirt.
I think all would agree that no one bike has yet been able to be best in class in all areas. IMO better wind/weather protection is key to making the Uly an Adventure Sport Tour... YMMV. Other farkels can more than likely be sourced from after market mfg. |

Really the only thing I can think of would be a large clip on windshield that would go right over the small one so that when it comes off you're done. It would have to tolerate 100 + mph and be very simple. |

My ideal Sport-Tourer would make an honest 100 HP at the rear wheel. It would have bars that are high enough with the right bend to not make my wrist hurt or put my hand to sleep after a couple of hours (adjustable bars would be OK ). The seat height would be a couple of inches lower than the Uly. It would have a hydraulic clutch with the hose routed so that I could see the odometer/tripmeter/clock display easily. The mode and reset buttons would be moved to the switch housings so that I wouldn’t have to take my hand off the bars to change functions (look at the switches on the Moto Guzzi Breva 1100). I’d like to be able to put some sort of throttle lock on; not an electronic cruise control as such, just something that would allow me to take my hand off the throttle for a few seconds( I really liked the Throttlemeister that I had on my S3-T and M2). It would have a fairing with lowers that offers reasonable protection from the elements without being a barn door; maybe a variant of the XBRR fairing. Leave the front brake alone, but make the rear brake stronger. Sometimes in the real world, you want to avoid using the front brake; having a better rear brake would be a plus. I neither want nor need any sort of ABS. Keep the Hepco & Becker bags, but push through the updated latches.
If Buell were to build this bike, I know who they’d sell two to.

Actually, my wife loves the midnight black/red of the XB12R. That would be her first choice in colors. I think the black/red looks good, but would prefer the grey of the '96 S2-T, or maybe Amazon Green.
However, if Buell builds the bike, I don't care if it's pink with purple polka dots. I can always take it to a Paint shop. |
