In '98 I got a new Cyclone, as a 2nd bike to a '98 Roadglide which I still have. I sold that nimble Cyclone after 2 years. didn't have enough time then - but now I do, so I just got an almost new '99 S3T. Rediscovered some stuff wears out from use, and other stuff gives up because of old age. So now the S3T's catching up for 9 yrs. of no use. Ohio to Ore. this spring.

New Year, New Bike, New Handle.
I've been Not_Purple_S2 since '03 but with the new(to me) bike arriving wed. and the S2 up for sale I figured it would be nice to start fresh with a new handle that's not model specific.

Hey Bryce...

Come on Down Man! Hey the more the better! But you might want to swing by the DC/MD/VA board in Storm Fronts. Those guys are right in your area.

Hello,
Apologies in advance for a long post but I would like to pick you guys' brains if I may?
I am unexpectedly considering the purchase of a new Lightning after finding out that it only weighs about 400 pounds. The reason being I want a lighter bike and was contemplating buying a base 883 Sportster which weighs 150 pounds more (which is still lighter than my Honda).
Love the look, it's bound to handle like a dream and provide more performance than I could ever need.
But others have warned me:
(1)Their value plummets like a rock.
(2)They eat tires at an obscene rate.
(3)They are hard to work on.
(4)Even the dealers are not fond of Buells in general.
Don't know if it's true, it's just what I've been told.
My personal reservations are:
(1) Passenger accomodation - stock seat looks short. Aftermarket options?
(2) Are good panniers available?
(3) I DO tend to ride in bad weather. Is there a decent windscreen available? Is it easily detachable?
Do any of you guys do light touring on them?
My nearest dealer is Great South HD/Buell in Newnan, GA. The salesman I contacted there told me that they discount Buells aggressively because they find them hard to sell.
I can't understand why such great-looking, technically brilliant bikes get so little respect. Obviously you guys like them; couldja clue me in?
Thanks,
Mark Miller

Mark,
If you're looking to buy a newer buell(2003+) pop into the XB Board here and repeat your question. I don't want to tie up this board but I will throw a few thoughts to ya. Find your nearest dealer and talk to them about Buells. See if you can find a "Buell Guy" there. Dealer Service varies greatly. The typical low resale means that you can find great deals if you don't mind buying used. And the improvements on the 08 models should help with future resale if you buy new. If you're looking for touring capabilities check out the Uly or XB12Ss.

If you don't buying an older bike check out the S2 or S3T. They are amazing touring bikes with factory hardbags, ample passenger room, and a nice fairing to keep the wind off ya. They can often be bought for a steal $3500-4500.

Also take full advantage of the "search" utility at the top of the page. You'll find that many of your questions have been asked before. But we never get tired of answering them.

Hi Buell Guys,
I have enjoyed reading here for about a year (really great forum), and sold my bike, and bought a new buell (xb12scg 150 miles).
I passed a half a million miles riding a bike long ago, and have a good amount of amatuer road race experience (600 class) (I dont race anymore).
You guys have given me tons of knowledge, and entertainment, and I hope to contribute here.
Thank You Guys,
Late Breaker

Salutations to everyone on BadWeb. I'm new to both this discussion forum and to the Buell riding experience. I've owned a 2007 XB12R for about five months and still find the bike surprising me in good ways and bad. I'll be logging on to this sight mainly for entertainment purposes. However, I would also like to gain some technical knowledge regarding the various performance mods that are available for my noble stead.
Thanks!

We're heading to Suches GA in March. Check out the adventure folder on Carolina Corner Carvers. I'm sure we'll have another C3 Jr. ride (children not required!) in May, WV Rally in August and Buelltoberfest (Suches GA) in October. I'm sure there will be some Jacksonville Rides and Sunday AM's to Michael's in Chapel Hill.

Hello all.
I'm sort of new to motorcycles (got my first dirt bike at 8yrs) completely new to street/sport bikes and the world of Buell.
My husband since the 1st year of our marriage 23yrs ago, has always wanted a street bike, but the nurse in me (who calls them 'donorcycles') would tell him "NO! ARE YOU CRAZY, I LIKE MY MEN IN 1 PIECE!" I'm really not that domoneering, I let him do whatever else he wants. When it came down to actually getting on a bike he was afraid of bodily injury/death.
Last year he was dx (diagnosed) with cancer. One month post tx (treatment) still very weak and weighing only 140lbs (normally weighs 160) he bought a used Yamaha Seca 2. He reasoned, anything can kill me, so what am I waiting for, I'm gonna do what I enjoy and live life while I can. A month later he arrived home with a Blast which when I asked "WHAT IS THAT/AND WHAT IS IT DOING HERE?" he replied, "well this one's for you!" Sort of like the small child caught with his hand in the cookie jar saying "but I'm getting a cookie for you". About a month later I came home from work to find a Susuki Katana in the barn. I'm thinking hard to myself, "now these things are machines right? and therefore incapable of reproduction? so why is it there are more of them?".
After a while I couldn't resist any longer. I got the key out and started the Buell. I just sat there idling. End of story. Now my husband is probably regretting bringing home one for me........

Leashrn,

I would suggest that you do whatever it takes to be less like the donors you mentioned. Enroll in a rider safety/training course so you and your husband can learn to ride on the small bikes supplied by the course. Check out books on rider safety from the library. Learn at your own pace. You didn't become a nurse overnight, you won't be a rider over night.
Avoid crowded roads that have dangerous intersections and shopping centers. Take short day time trips on open roads and build your experience. The more confidence you gain the more enjoyable riding will become. I think that is why many of us ride.

Buellboiler,
Thanks for the advice. We've both taken the rider's edge course offered at our local HD dealer. Had a Blast, so to speak. I'm a 'lesson' junkie. Everything I've ever done in my life from, riding hunter/jumpers (horses), to skiing/snowboarding, mountain biking and something called dog agility, I get professional instruction.
We are now planning this spring/summer to attend some novice track days. If I had it my way, I would only ever ride on a track!
Most of the roads near us are pretty quiet. I ride to work when weather permits, the worst thing about it is riding in the dark! I often go to work and then home again in the dark! But my commute is <8 mi. I refuse to ride in the rain.
I have only put 1,000 or so miles since I got my endorsement at the end of August last year.
Can't wait for the weather to warm up, dry out and NOT SNOW!
Good to hear from experienced folks.
I've also wondered about bike adjustment.. think I'll post on the tech board and see if anyone has adjusted a bike for a smaller rider.
Keep warm!

Leashrn,

Perhaps the folks at the track events can help you to setup your bike. In my opinion this is something that should be performed by the dealership when you purchase the bike. However that appears to be asking too much in almost every situation. Freinds of mine just purchased a pair for 2-up Artic Cat snowmobiles. After the first day of riding I notice that none of the spring settings were right for 2 riders. After 45 minutes, both sleds were ready and they enjoyed riding for the rest of the week.
Also if you plan to focus on track riding your settings may differ from street riding. I would refer to the track experts.
Riding in the dark solo can be undersireable. Particularly if you are riding in the dark both ways.
Good luck on changing your hours of doing more weekend riding.

Hiya, I bought my 2001 Buell Blast a year ago. Nothing unusual about that, you say. The difference is I live in the UK. Apparently there were about 30 shipped to the UK in 2001 and mine is one those. I am not sure how many are left over here, but I know of two others. I love my Blast. It has given me back my confidence in riding bikes. I have put about 1500 miles on it since having it. My other half has a Yamaha FJR1300, so if we go out together I ride pillion. I prefer to ride my Blast when I am on my own, or with someone other than my husband!!!! I have been introduced to your group by Jim Nance, and followed his trip across the US via your website. I am looking forward to hearing about all your trips and experiences. Jill : )}
