The George Bryce S&S Buell riden by Chip Ellis won the Pro Stock bike final at the Las Vegas round of the NHRA Drag Racing Series today.

Once again the Harleys were in it but had mechanical gremlins.

I realize there is very little in common with our bikes but it does have an actual Firebolt fairing, front fender and tank cover! It looks like a Firebolt to me, Craig or Dave, can you hook me up??

Makes you wonder how Harley, with all their resources are getting beat by a privateer? Maybe they should just sponsor these guys and give the excess to Erik and the boys!!!!

Prostock bikes have very little to do with the stock bikes they are based on in reality, so yeah I will take it as a FIRST BUELL TO WIN PROSTOCK BIKES!

Watched as he smoked the Suzuki! It's about time. Wonder how long it will take the NHRA to slap restrictions on that bike. I'd say 1st race of next year. But it was sweet!

Nice bike and nice win. Just wonder why they call it a Buell as other than a few cosmetic parts it ain't. At least that is what I understand from the postings and related readings.

I guess I need someone to explain it to me slowly, eh?

Wycked, I watched the races on tv & I thought this was the last one of the season? They begin the 2005 campaign in a couple months.

Bill, im not even sure there are any stock Buell cosmetic parts on the bike. Course I also dont think there are any on the other bikes either. I guess its like Nascar where they call it a Ford Taurus or a Dodge Intrepid even though neither manufacturer actually produces a 2 door version of the vehicle & there certainly isnt 1 stock part on a Stock car racer.

Also look at the top fuel funny cars....John Force runs a Mustang?? Huh?? How in the hell is that thing a Mustang??

40th ANNUAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
NHRA FINALS
NOVEMBER 11 - 14, 2004
POMONA, CALIFORNIA

from www.nhra.com:

Considering his resume of successes on other circuits, it wasn't a huge surprise to see Chip Ellis win a race. Nor was it shocking to see him dominate the day, considering he was riding one of multiple championship-winning crew chief George Bryce's latest creations.

Chip Ellis

Looking cool as the savviest of racers, Ellis handled former Bryce standout and three-time series champion Angelle Savoie in the final with a 7.191 at 179.92 mph to Savoie's 7.255 at 177.49 mph. Savoie tried her best, leaving with a .032- to .059-second headstart, but Bryce's horsepower kicked in at the top end and Ellis was able to ride around her for the win.

"Things are looking good," Ellis said. "The team gave me a great bike, and I needed it because it seems like I was late all day, but the bike would carry me. The team deserves the credit for this win.

"I've been fast here on a Funny Bike. I think we went 229 mph on this track, so I felt comfortable out there. The big difference with racing in the NHRA is the huge amount of fans and the big-time media coverage. I'm overwhelmed by it all. I've got people pulling me this way and that. It's crazy. I guess I'll just need to keep winning and get used to it.

"I wasn't really that nervous, which kind of surprised me. Just before the final George pulled me aside and said that people usually get nervous in the first round and the last round. He told me just to do what I do and not think about it. I knew my motorcycle was capable and I just blocked everything else out."

To get to the final, Ellis rode his G-Squared S&S Buell V-Twin past Chip Hunter, Antron Brown, and Shawn Gann for his first shot at an NHRA trophy.

The race at Ponoma, CA is the last race of the '04 season. All the Pro classes have crowned their champions except for pro Stock bikes.
Hines has a ~100 point lead (20 pts for each round). I believe he just about clinches if he qualifies.

What a trick engine!!

I love roadracing but the true exotic powerplants live at the dragstrip!! And talk about SOUND!! IMO.

It appears the Buell is air cooled? Is the Hines HD powerplant water cooled?

I dont think it is....sorta like the top fuel cars, they run so much fuel thru that it keeps the motor cool & the length of time they run doesnt amount to much.

OK, here's a question. Why doesn't anybody build a 60 degree supershort stroke big bore S&S motor powered Buell for big time roadracing. More even power delivery, more hp., more reliability. Why not? Cut the stroke down to whatever 1350cc is with 4.8" bore. Or heck, even leave the stroke kinda XB9 lenghth. Alot of classes are unlimited. It would seem like a screamer. Shorter pushrods are lighter. There has to be a kickass balance in there somewhere.

No AMA/WSBK Road Racing class allows one off engines or bikes, they have to be production based.

FUSA used to have unlimited GP, I don't think the current rules would allow such a bike as you describe.

MotoGP? As long as the engine is no greater than 990cc, they can do pretty much whatever they want.

I like that. Is like "Truth in Advertising."

Nice of S&S to use the Buell Moniker on their creation. Is always good to have the exposure. Like Court says, there is no such thing as bad PR.

In a way, I was trolling to see if anyone would mention how much of the other bike is really Suzuki. LOL

Court, rather than asking us to remind you to tell the story about..., why don't you just start writing your biography. It would save us all a lot of time and frustration. Especially since no matter what we say or do, you never tell.

the NHRA let the Vtwins have pretty loose rules, things like greater displacement and they can use Fuel Injection while the I4's can not.

Is it fair? Not really, if you are a Suzuki fan.

Does it result more fans in the stands and much greater exposure for the NHRA and the Pro Stock Bike class in particular? YES. I think the NHRA made the right move, but they almost shot the goose that laid the golden egg (the Vh/SE/HD team) when they made the VTwins add 40 pounds in the middle of the season, they have not been as competitive since then, until this past weekend with the Buell.

Inaccurate statement....ask Bill (Reepicheep), he got an earful today.

Time, it's a big 1 month anniversary today, dictates the abbreviated version. Booze, time and the end of a great day racing make the story better...

I was sitting at my desk at the Buell factory when a guy called from the San Fran area. He'd bought one of the High Voltage Yellow 1996 S-1 Lightnings. He had problems and was getting no where with the dealer. I tried to help and it was like climbing an oiled mirror.

The guy goes ballistic, starts screaming and swearing...tells me that his buddy is a commercial pick S-56 helo pilot, he's gonna drape the bike in lemons and dangle over an upcoming event.

I tell the guy to "hold it right there" and demand to know when he is going to do this.

He says something to the effect "now I have ya scared and ya wanna deal?, right?".

I say "hell no, I wanna get all the Buells into area showrooms that I can....ANY publicity is GOOD publicity" (particularly when the earthbound folks looking skyward no NOTHING BUT "it's a Buell or something".

He soon calmed, we talked, I sent, they fixed and Mike and I are pals to this day.

Court

P.S. - by the way, if you ever want a "glass is half full story" remind me to tell you about the scourge of the Buell recalls. Did I like what buell went through? ...NO. But, guess what happened to the number of motorcyclists who didn't know what a "BUELL" was? You got it...they ALL know now.

The Elves, if on simple tenacity, will prevail.

Yeah...well next your gonna get the "Sorry, we can't just fix the Buell and leave you stupid and expect things to change" tale.

That left a group of Buell engineers who'd wandered in the office with splitting sides and me summarily declared the only person who could tell a Buell owner, calling a Customer Service line, they were an idiot and have them declare they just got "the best customer service ever".

'Tis, my friends, an art form.

I would rather have Court tell us that the above bike is actually a lowered, pre-production 2006 S4T - only available as a sport-tour model... with dual ZTL disks and owner adjustable ECM.
