BMW has plans to make "fake" Jap bikes with their famous, coveted blue and white badges in asia, China i'm thinking, but not in Germany. They want to expand their market share (corporate greed) and put a BMW branded bike in every sport bike riders garage.
Where's your German craftsmanship and quality now?
Now you can buy the sizzle but not the steak.

Expand market share = corporate greed, eh?

I kinda thought that was the point of capitalism.
I don't think going after more market share is inherently evil.

Ask any ex-GM/Ford/auto company employee how nice it is to live with declining market share.

I would like to see American companies more effectively implementing that sort of corporate greed(increased market share). I just hope that if they ever manage to dig themselves out of the hole they are in, they can do it with American workers.

As far as looking a lot like an '09 GSX-R, I couldn't agree more. Since the GSX-R series is one of the best selling line of sport bikes in the world, straying too far from that formula doesn't make much sense if you are trying to break into that market.

Triumph did it, and I hope BMW does it too. Sure it's a risk for them, but well thought-out risk is a big part of what makes a company grow.

If it works, maybe there's a chance that HD will follow. I would love to see Americans dominate the American sport bike market.

Damn skippy. If not dominate, at least be a major contender.

The 1125 platform is a great start!

You know, I've never even paid attention to it till you guys pointed it out. They are very similar arent they? Well, I'm not sure I could get behind it till I saw one in person. Its not corporate greed, its everday greed, fed by an ever-changing economy. Ya gotta keep up with the Johnsons, or in this case the Kawasuzihamas.

Form follows function... and they're going roadracing... so what did you expect it to look like? If, as BMW claims, they intend to price it competitively against the offerings from Japan, they might very well score themselves a whole new bunch of customers.

I'd ride it in a heartbeat!

The K is longitudinally mounted. The new bike is transverse mounted.

The first pic is for real.

They may have different parts, but the overall design is a spot on carbon copy.

Conceived and engineered 100% by BMW's chief designer and team. Cycle World's Kevin Cameron gave his analysis of the bike back in the July 2008 issue.

Wasn't till last year at the Intermot show in Cologne, Germany and in the Jan. issues of CW and Motorcyclist that it was shown with the finished race colors. I prefer the one with white lowers and blue front wheel and white in back.

As I understand it they want to compete and win and found that it would be difficult to do that while sorting out their trademark front ends and drivetrains. If they're on equal equipment then they'll know quickly how good they really are.

And if they can keep it as affordable as the other manufacturers, I'd buy one too.

If it was not painted red/white/blue and had the BMW spinner on it you'd be hard pressed to say who makes this bike. Sad.
But, as stated before, BMW (or its shareholders...) must have realized that winning is more important than being different. There is a lot to be said for and against that. Though Ducati seems to do ok.

I'd still rather have a R90/S.

Would you rather be different and have 2008 bikes selling for 4 grand less than MSRP?You don't need to look farther than the 1125 for an example.

That is a good point. I am sure that the less than stellar road tests had something to do with that.

BMW has been building a longitude mounted IL 4 now for several years. The k1200r for example. Looks like the same engine. BMW is just trying to catch more of a mainstream market. The K1200R is one ugly ass bike.
