Okay, this will sound crazy. But it is California I'm talking about!

I just picked up a Buell X1 Lightning (Millenium Edition). It is registered in Utah, is a 49-state bike, and has 5,500 miles on the ticker.

CA won't let me register it because it doesn't yet have 7,500 miles on the odometer. The CHP does the check, so I can't just lie about it.

Question >> Without riding the bike 2,000 miles, how can I get it to show 7,500 miles on the odometer. If I found and swapped in a speedo from another X1, would that work? Is that info even stored in the speedo, or is it somewhere else?

I'm at a loss. First time Buell owner, but at risk of not riding it if I can't make it legal with CA registration.

Thanks in advance!

If it has a tag on it, ride it.
You'll be surprised at how fast 2000 miles will go by.I've had my bike since April and already have over 10,000 miles...

It is stored in the ODO via battery. Send me your 5,500 mi one and I'll send you my 48,000mi one.
Or just crate the bike to me, I'll ride it back to you and voila.

Josh
St Louis, Mo (Don't worry, I'll detour through FL or NY to make sure we get the miles)

Josh, aren't you a true friend?! You'd do all that for me

Glitch, I wish it was that easy. The tags on it expired in August, so they are out of date. And I know it is just a matter of time before I get pulled over...

What the heck sort of stupid law makes a sled w/ less than 7500 miles un-registerable??? WTF!?!?

If it is really really stupid, your instincts tell you it has to be Florida or California. Apparently a non-CA bike just magically starts running with less emissions at 7,500 miles. I agree - WTF?! But it is the law....

You can dyno tune it for a couple thousand miles!

I guess I didn't hear about that - my S1 came from Seattle, although it had 10,000 on it . . .

I read that PDF (plus lots of other silly stuff at the DMV) before I called. The PDF says basically what I've been saying - I can't register it here because they say it is NEW because it has less the 7,500 miles.

Any other ideas? I might end up registering it in Missouri (my father lives there) if I can't find any crafty ways to get this thing to show 7,500 miles...

Run to Nevada or Arizona and get a mailbox etc or whatever where you can get a real address and not just a po box and register there. And while you are there get a drivers license so when you get pulled over it will go one your out of state license.

Mike - Not sure if they are the same part, but my '00 M2 has 10,000 miles on the odo. I live in San Lorenzo and we could swap out the speedo's long enough for you to get your tags.

The millenium edition is a sweet looking bike. Bought my M2 a couple months before they came out or I might have sprung the extra bucks for the X1.

Just bring it to Missouri. We can get the needed miles your bike in about 2 days with no problem.

Glenn, that's a cool offer (same goes to you other non-locals that said the same). It looks like I can register it in Missouri after all since I own a home there. Unlike California, Missouri seemed perfectly willing to register the bike and collect the Sales Tax.

If that doesn't work out, I may take you up on your offer. Thanks in advance!

Oh yeah, put together a cheesy webpage with real pics of the bike. Here it is >>

The reason for not being able to register a vehicle in California with less than 7500 miles, is to prevent new or near new bikes that aren't Cal emissions cert from being brought in with the sole intent of bringing it in. Usually someone that is moving in, vice living here and buying an out of state bike, will have enough miles.
I've heard if you shop around at DMV's you can sometimes sneak one in.

Question...after having read the Link provided by Jprovo, I am still unclear as to the likelihood of getting my X1 licensed in CA when I move back to Orange County.

Is a 49 State model with Race ECU, gutted airbox, Vance & Hines Can and Techlusion DFO to take out the lean spots. Is Dyno'd for low and mid range and is real good on the pipe (sniffer) test, just don't know how the numbers correlate.

Any input from someone that has attempted to register a bike like this in CA would be greatly appreciated.

FYI, the 7,500 mile requirement for out of state bikes has been around for years. Suggest swapping plates with a registered bike (preferably same year, make and model) and then putting the miles on it without getting caught.

Bill - When I read the brochure on James link, all I could think was "there's a big difference between what they say and what they do". There is NO smog test for motorcycles and the only thing they check is the mileage. If you were a resident of another state when you bought the bike and it has 7500 miles on the odo when you go into DMV after moving back to CA, they'll be happy.

After all, they can't find any of those sport bikes or Harleys that have illegal "off road only" mufflers (and in most cases it's stamped right on the muffler).

Mike - The Missouri registration sounds good. Only down side is you'll end up paying taxes again if you want to register it in CA at a later date. If you decide to do the speedo swap, just let me know.

As a new Buell owner there are a couple events this weekend that you would enjoy:

Modesto Buell is having a Halloween Party/Open House on Saturday with $25 dyno runs, free BBQ lunch, raffle prizes, etc.

On Sunday there is a BattleTrax in Dublin at the Sheriffs Training Facility. Think autocross or "drag racing with curves" on your Buell. Great fun even if you only want to watch.

Also, on the first Monday of each month American Sport Bike Night meets at the Straw Hat on Washington Blvd. in San Leandro.

Hope to see you at one of these events.

Glenn, that Battletrax thing sounds wild. After having only owned three big-twin Harleys, I"m sure me on the Buell would be the slowest thing ever on the track. I still can't even bring myself to lean it past 20 degrees cause I'm used to my Harley pegs dragging when I did that!

I need to get the thing properly registered (legal!) before I hit the road. I will have to get out to one of the local events. I'm glad there is so much around. I didn't know that would come with Buell ownership!

Bill, Buy a new sensor, which you will need anyhow sooner or later: Show them the bill and they will understand, without words, why the bike shows such a low mileage.
Could be true.

Yes, thanks for all the info and offers of assistance. I'll be putting a MO plate on mine as I might never get the bike to 7,500 miles.

I just had the 5K servicing done, and noticed last night that the Harley/Buell dealer put the 6R12 plugs in, versus the prescribed 10R12. I guess they don't read Service Advisories?!

Mike - Don't know where you had the X1 serviced, but two words come to mind - Modesto and Vallejo. Both are Buell friendly and do the job right. Unfortunately there seem to be way too many HD/Buell dealers that don't really want to do the "Buell thing".

The dealership where I bought my M2 always gave me the feeling that they would rather just have me go away whenever I brought it in for service and said "it's a Buell". I now go to Modesto.

Mille,
Some Buells have a history of failed speedo sensors and cables. Hmmm...could be for once that's a good thing, if you can talk fast enough.

Don't shoot me if I'm wrong but I don't think a new speedo sensor resets the total mileage back to zero. If I remember things right, the mileage just picks up where it left off.

The used speedometer idea sounds best to me. Ask your friends, your dealer or do a Goggle search for Salvage Yards and see it you can locate a '99 or newer X1 unit for cheap.

Mike, It's not hard.

a) "The original ODO broke, so they installed a new one. The orignal had 2,000 miles"

b) Become friends with ANY cop and have him sign it off.

c) Put 2,000 miles on it

d) Trade ODO's.

Nevco:

no problems bringing in a bike if you're moving in; it doesn't even need to have 7500 miles.

The DMV workers who check your VIN and such have NO clue what to look for and don't care. All they do is verify the VIN. No smog check, nothing.

HD has a speedo/tach tester that could be left on over night to run up the odometer...
Or find a electronics guy with a square wave audio generator (the speedo sensor is "open collector" output). 2160 Hz = 100 MPH.

I knew asking here was right - you guys have some pretty innovative ideas. I've got my Missouri tags in process, so I can skip on CA all together. Shame on them for turning down my sales tax - Lord knows we need it in CA!

Glenn, funny thing you mentioned that about Harley dealerships. I took the Buell to Livermore HD since they also claim to "do Buells". But I was a bit perplexed that they couldn't find the Service Bulletins in hardcopy or on their hd-net.com (I had to take them in printed from here so they could check if my bike was in correct shape.)

And then a couple of nights ago, I started reading threads about the 6R12 plugs being pulled out in favor of the 10R12. I even found the Service Bulletin that announced it. I then went to look at the bike in the garage - Sure enough, it has the Sportster 6R12 (wrong ones) in it.

I called Livermore HD and they said, "Oh, we didn't really know about that bulletin...and the 6R12 plug is better for that bike anyway." Apparently the service folks at HD know more about the bike that Erik Buell himself!!

Thanks Vic...That did have me concerned with the mods I have done to the X1. Am still waiting for the decibel and smog checks for street bikes. Probably just a matter of time.

Now get the Terminator to dump the helmet law (at least for cruisers) and I will be back in a heartbeat! I still can't believe that Pete Wilson signed that Bill. Is Sick Dick Floyd still alive or did he finally argue himself to death?

Now you know another reason I can't see myself living in Kalli.. I mean, my bikes are illegal, my cars are illegal, my guns are illegal.. Hell, I'll bet they'll argue that my Wife is illegal since we didn't get married there..

Nope, you guys out there have my condolences, what with the laws/fires/floods etc.. the only thing I can envy is the weather.. Riding all year round sounds nice..
