You'll need all 9 rounds in a 30/30 to stop a charging bear!!! Lets see now.... I''ve got a 12ga when they come through the door, then a 20ga, and then (2) S&W .40's.... if they happen to make it through the 30 or so shells and run from me, I'll bring out the .223 just to plink their legs out, and finish them with the nice Winchester .300 win mag

45acp+P is my choice in my Glock 30. Recoil is not a factor because of the adrenaline factor. For all those Glock bashers out there who dont like them because they dont have a safety, I have knocked my off my night stand and dropped in out of my truck both times fully loaded with one in the chamber and nothing happened.....O and now Hornady makes a TAP personal defense round for hand guns, rifles and shotguns that has little or no muzzle flash.
Safety!? I dont need no stinken safety!

My personal problem with a Glock is the trigger system, not if it has a safety or not. My Sig-Sauer P220 does not really have a safety, neither does a revolver for the most part. They have safety features built in to prevent AD (accidental discharge), but do not per se have a manual safety system like something like a 911 Colt for example.

I still might get a Glock someday just to really get a feel for the trigger system, someday, maybe....

I've got a CZ 40-P and a Colt 1991A1. One was great out of the box (CZ), the other needed some work (Colt), but I love them both just the same.

My wife has a 40S&W Browning Hi-Power. If you want a double stack single action semi that's the only way to go.

Most guns from all the reputable makers are great these days. Pick one that fits you ergonomically that has the features you're looking for and you can't go wrong.

I can see you are confused. The 30/30 not for the charging bear, it's for me as the bear is charging!

If you carry and have not consulted legal council I am going to call you foolish. I have my attorneys card in the holster with my side arm..... Just in case. Remember punks have family's who believe they are innocent. There are always attorneys to represent them too. Right or wrong.

Move down here to Texas. The Castle Doctrine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Doctrine) went into effect Sept. 1st of last year. In addition, another new law went into effect at the same time that a lot of Texans aren't aware of. That is, a motorist can now carry a concealed weapon in their car without having to have a CHL.

On the one hand, I applaud our ability to defend and protect our families and property. However, the motorist provision has made me much more tolerant of other drivers so that I don't get into a road rage situation.

It sucks when a victim of a crime has more to worry about from the legal system in the aftermath than from the criminal who started the incident.

I wonder what it would take to get some victim's rights thing going along the lines of criminals not being able to profit from their crimes later through movie and book rights. Would be great to have some civil protection as a victim.

This discussion goes to the gutter from here so I'll just sidestep out of the spotlight for a bit.

Polacking.... thanks for clearing that up!! Towjam, here in Missouri, we too have the Castle Doctrine. In fact, just a few weeks ago a 19 year old shot and killed a 20 something year old kid who tried to break into his house.... charges were never filed as he was covered under the Castle Doctrine. He's almost become a hero in our town, as he was one of the first to defend himself against our rising crime rates....

I don't know if there is verbiage in the actual bill that explicitly prevents you from being taken to court in a civil suit. However, I would have to think that if sued, the Castle Doctrine would be a helluva defense.

Hopefully I'll never have to find out first hand.

Dont make a lot of difference it is a hell of a lot better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

That XD with the safety looks intriguing. I have shot 4 or 5 thousand rounds through my XD40 tactical without a single problem or negligent discharge.

Best bet is to buy a gun that fits, feels good, and you like to and can afford to shoot. Sure, some models or calibers might sound like better choices on paper, but that is the equivalent of spec sheet racing motorcycles. When its dark, and your mind is racing, you need something you are comfortable with, and have muscle memory with. The best gun in the world wont do you a bit of good if you dont shoot it.

My new Smith and Wesson 9mm has no safety either. A little unnerving being the first gun I've owned without one. It may end up instilling positive habits like clearing the chamber and magazine before the gun is placed somewhere other than my own hand. Who knows.

I started out with a Colt Officer .45. I loved that gun... kicked like a friggen mule.
I traded it in on a Kimber compact carry .45.
I have put countless rounds through the Kimber, and the only miss-feeds are due to a weak spring in my hi-cap magazine.
I love my Kimber, but I wish I would have paid full for it and kept the Officer as well. That thing was flawless also.

This thread has the usual banter about everyones favorite pistol, cartridge caliber, shotguns, etc., but not one mention of proper training and discipline when it comes to handling and shooting firearms (maybe there was, but I didn't see it anywhere). Lack of trigger discipline is an offense I've seen countless times when people handle weapons. Whether a pistol has a manual safety or not, never EVER put your index finger on a trigger unless the weapon is pointed at what you intend to shoot. Even if the weapon is unloaded, always dry fire it at something you wouldn't mind being ventilated.

Here is what I always do when I shoot with people I don't know: I'll hand them one of my unloaded weapons (no magazine, racked three times and decocked (or dry fired in the case of my GLOCK 30). If the person puts his index finger on the trigger right away without regard to where it's pointing even in it's cleary unloaded condition... I'll stow the weapon and LEAVE.

I've never had an unintentional discharge in any of my weapons... but I keep the fear that it could happen to me if I'm not diligent to a fault.

Get trained and stay trained.

Dj Kap, wish I could say the same. Well I can, my buddy can't. I let a different friend borrow my truck and my buddy was in the back seat. Found my gun case, opened it, and claims he jacked the slide back to confim it was empty, when in actuality he probably chambered one, and made my passenger door look like swiss cheese. Let me tell you, a Chevy Avalanche door does nothing to stop a .40 cal Hollow P. bullet.

God knows where the bullet rested. Scary Chit.

Before everyone gets on their soapbox, I know, ok? I KNOW. How stupid. I can't even trust my adult friends around a gun. Horrible. Not to mention the gun went off behind the drivers head. I wanted to hurt him, badly. But I reduced him to tears with a verbal bashing. The gun was in my cage (truck) because some guys from work and I randomly hit the range after (or during when boss isnt around) work. At a great inconvienence to myself, I have removed the gun from truck to prevent further *#&*-ups by stupid ass friends. Now, I can only go to the range if it is planned, as going home to get gun and the range itself is opposite directions.

So I'm currently collecting payments on the $1400 it will cost to have the door repaired. Not to mention the $220 poker table top he shot through.

The gun is a HK USP .40 by the way. I love it. Very smooth. My bro has a Walther P99 .40. Also a great weapon. Mainly bought for the range and home security. Plus i'm a guy. Guys love guns.

In closing, I have to give DJ KAP props for bringing that up. My buddy could have killed one of our friends that night. Gun safety is very important. I feel like the whole incident was my fault for leaving the gun in the truck. Just proves that you never know what could happen and every extra precaution that is taken to insure safety is a extra step that removes liability. After it happened, a slew of Shoulda Coulda Woulda ran through my head.

I tried taking somebody to the range and trying to train them on a handgun first once. Big mistake. We went through all the rules, and they listened and tried, and we did pretty good on trigger control, but it is just ***way*** to easy to accidentally point a handgun some other direction then down range.

We got through it, but I was exhausted and stressed out by the time we were done. I had to physically grab their hand / gun 5 or 6 times because they were in "mid swing" going the wrong direction.

From then on, I start people with any of the long guns... preferably the Ruger 10/22. That also lets me do the demo of chambering a round (which to them doesn't look significant), dropping the magazine on the bench, asking them "so it can't shoot now, right?", then telling them to point it at the target and pull the trigger.

The fact that it goes "bang" drives the point home like talking to them never will. And the fact that it is a long gun makes it SOOOO much easier for me to "intervene" if they are about to swing it to point across the firing line. The fact that it has a red dot sight, and that a rank amateur can explode 20 ritz crackers with 30 shots at 25 yards, makes it a fun experience for everyone.

If after a few hundred rounds of that, and many dead crackers, they are still having fun and they are doing really good pointing the thing the right direction and keeping their finger off the trigger until they are ready to shoot, we get out the .22 revolver.

They can't hit anything, but its fun to shoot.

Then we get out the .45 acp. They can't hit anything with that either, but the fact that it makes a 1 foot wide crater in the backstop makes it *look* like they hit the cracker, so they are having fun again : )

I was just grazing in the magazine aisle at the grocery store and looking at the Guns&Ammo magazine. In it was an ad for the new SigSauer P250 that looks like a very interesting concept. Real interesting.

Very interesting..... ability to shoot cheap 9mm rounds at the range, and change it to a .40 or .45 for carry purposes... great idea. I'd love to see the price...being a Sig, I know it's not inexpensive!
