Aren't these the free backpacks they are giving away for doing a demo ride? If so, wouldn't it be against the companies policy for a DEALERSHIP to SELL them? Riders Harley-Davidson. Alabama's largest Harley dealership (according to the ebay add).

The one I got for my test ride looks a little different. It has a gray or silver "mesh" detail top, bottom and a strip where the zippers are. Could be the earlier rendition from last year?. Still if it's the "free sling bag" it's just wrong to sell them IMHO.

Perhaps it's last years promo bag.

There's a not free Buell sling bag here - but it ain't the same...

Doesn't look like the bag I have. This years model is worth $10.00. I would buy this years for $10.00, who has one for sale. Been using mine for about 3 weeks now and my only complaint is that it doesn't hold a 12 pack!

Why in the HEYA would someone buy last years free bag?
Now I know why none of the dealers I went to had any!

As much as I love the Buell and the Mothership Product line I refuse to pay to advertise for them. All of my hats, sombody else has paid for, and I am still part of the team!

Oh how I wish HD shops would care a little more about the (global!) brand.

Done.

In addition, I wrote each of the bidders and told them they had just been "fished". I told them (may need Dave's help here), that I'd be pleased to provide them with a brand spanking new Buell sling bag at the princely sum of ZERO.

A FEW Buell dealers are weights on the ankles of the company. Yesterday I had a very eye opening experience.

Court, Cameron (Clown) at Stone Mountain HD/Buell may be able to help you out with some bags. He has sent a bunch out to board members, including me, just for asking. Thanks again Cameron.

Daves may be busy for the next week or two, get well soon Kandie.

I thought it was wrong that these bags were being sold, glad to see the subject revisited.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, I don't see what is wrong with selling last years sling bags. Perhaps they are loaded with this years bags and just want to get rid of the old ones at cost.

You have to admit that the price is cheap as it includes individual bag packaging and UPS shipping that they are not reimbursed for. Additionally, it is my understanding that the dealer is charged for the bags and then receive a credit once the test ride form is reported to HDI.

Sure, they could give this years test riders a choice of the new or old bag like Hal's did, just give the bags away like a few other dealers have done or use them as door prizes at HOG and Charity events like another Milwaukee dealer has done.

Still when you think about it, they did pay for the bags and that gives them title to them which allows them to do what they want with them. I know it stinks, but at least the bags will be on the road with the Buell Logo showing up at all the great sport bike hangouts and nobody was screwed in the process.

Reminds me of the time I ran a similar promotion that gave the consumer a Skill Electric Chain Saw with each purchase. The cost was cooped between the manufacturer, the distributor and the dealer. The distributors and dealers all took advantage of the excellent pricing negotiated with Skill's Promotional Sales Department and a lot of the left over saws were sold to local hardware stores below their cost from Skill's Retail Sales Department yet above my distributor's and dealer's cost.

Hell, everyone made money in the deal, the consumers were happy and I received a large bonus that year. The only folks that were mad were Skill's Retail Sales Department as they didn't meet their quota that year in chain saw sales.

Needless to say, my life was a little miserable at the trade shows that year compliments of the harassment I took from Skill's Retail Sales folks. However, both Skill's and my Corporate Legal Departments agreed the promotion and subsequent liquidation of the extra saws was legal and there was nothing that could be done about it.

So what's wrong with a Buell Dealer trying to break even on last years promotional sling bags?

On the humorous side, with this dealer selling last years bags at such a low price on Ebay, I bet the only negative thing it does is prevent folks that got them free for taking a demo ride from making a profit from selling them on Ebay themselves.

Ain't like we haven't seen that done before, eh?

To rebutle the devil...

The dealers got paid for every bag they gave away with test rides. I believe close to $50.

All they have to do is submit the form you filled out after you test ride and they got credit for the bag.

So all said dealer has to do is make up a bunch of forms, fill em out, get paid then sell em on Ebay.
Making more money...

Now that is saying that they are doing this, I am not sure as I am not employed by them. But I know of a dealer that wanted to do this and I advised against it.

That is for the dealers records and safety.
What you were helping them do is sign demo ride documents.

All the marketing dept wants is that small 4 by 8 sheet of paper with rider info and signature, it is not a demo ride form in anyway. Just a way to collect marketing info.

Outrider, my one beef about them selling last years bags would be this:

I visited my local Buell dealer with free hat promotion in hand. The sales manager told me they decided not to participate because it cost them too much money (?) and that they still had bags left from last year. Already knowing what their response would be, I went ahead and asked if there was any chance of getting one of them instead. You could see him holding in his laughter. He, however, wasted no time in trying to sell me a new Buell.

I dont know about last years bag, but, IF they had a 2 strap backpack, I would take a test drive, even knowing I would probably end up buying a new one....though I really shouldnt...LMAO

My insirance between 3 trucks, 2 cars and one bike is KILIING ME....

anyone wanna buy a truck....LMAO(j/king)

Dont really have anything constructive to say, other than my local dealer has been doing demo runs like crazy.... we have 3 dedicated Buellers there, one in sales..one in parts, and one in service.....

FWIW, Dave, hope Kandie is feeling better soon...

Anyway....

EDIT, FYI, that Ebay link shows nothing for sale buy that seller....

The dealers are reimbursed for the bags we purchase. We have to buy the bags up front and then have to submit a demo ride form. If the dealer does not use all the bags, they just don't get all their money back. I have now sent out over 50 sling bags to Badwebbers. The farthest was sent to South Africa. I am doing this to help out other riders that don't have good Buell dealers in their area. I am now down to about 150. We will use some as door prizes, raffles, etc. The bags don't cost that much..less than $20. I'm not going to sell any of them. I would rather give one away and make some happy than make 2 or 3 dollars.

Wow. The power of the press! That eBAy link is dead. "This seller is not selling anything at this time."
In spite of having a GREAT dealership in Vancouver, BC (Canada), these promos are only on in the States. Got the hat courtesy of Firemanjim. If anyone had a spare sling bag, I'd happily put it to good use. (Clown or Dave or ?)Even have a US mailing address for on-line purchases (courtesy of a riding bud) if necessary.

Thats a shame.

I posted about wanting a bag a few weeks ago and Aydenxb9 invited me to come to his dealership and get one. For me the testride was incidental, I just wanted the bag. I ended up riding an XB12 for the first time. Now I want one. I suspect that's what the marketing folks at Buell were counting on.

Wow...They did better than I thought they would. Guess there is a demand for Buell Sling Bags among those that couldn't/didn't get them the legitimate (read: free) way.

Oh well, all the more advertising for Buell riding down the road now. Sure beats collecting dust in the back room, eh?

Please don't confuse this dealer with others. The reason I say this is we really don't know if he is an active Buell dealer and has a supply of new style bags on hand to cover this years demo's.

Additionally, as Spidey pointed out, we don't know if this dealer paid for them or made fraudulent claims to get credit for them (read: double dipping).

I still see nothing wrong with liquidating last years bags in this manner as long as no fraud was committed.

One thing, only a few of the Bad Weber's know (and I ain't one of them) is the contract or agreement the dealer made with Buell to participate in the program. Therein could lie either the noose or loophole.

Pcmodeler...Sorry to hear your dealer is a schmuck. Same goes for the dealer that held the bags back for a commitment and a credit application.

And it almost seems like these guys didn't really give the right info when selling it...here's from the first listing:

Q: Is it a sling bag?
A: No, it is a backpack. It has 2 straps that open up and one goes across your chest and the other overlays it and secures with velcro. Thanks, Jack
