My bike have always cruised at a rock solid speed, never varied at all but today it seemed like it didn't want to maintain the throtle setting while cruising. Not a big drop in speed but I could feel it. Got home and took the float bowl off, looked at the bowl and it was shiny clean. Main jet looked great and the pilot was a bit dirty but clear. Do you think that this is the problem? Anyone had this symptom with a carb style Buell? Just wondering if this is a minor symptom waiting to get worse and I can replace a gasket/hose or something before it strands me. I will clean the carb and probably buy a new pilot jet, throw some seafoam in it and try it.

Could be an intake leak...

Got the carb completely off and going into the dealership to order intake seals carb seal, new pilot jet, new gas line elbow fitting that I broke! and misc stuff. Noticed that one of the four top screws that holds on the plastic top of the carb was missing. Possible air leak there????

If you broke your plastic over brass elbow replace it with a solid brass one, just did it to my CV carb since mine was cracked and leaking. MUCH better design!

Next time it is surging pull the vent hose off your gas tank and see if it stops the issue. Sometimes it can be leaky intake seals and sometimes that vent line can be clogged.

The gas tank vent is the first thing I checked! All those years of reading Haynes and Clymer manuals has that burned into my memory banks. Maybe it is the west coast of Canada but from the over 100 motorcycles I have owned only one 1964 YM-1 yamaha had the gas tank cap vent hole pulled with rust.
An update on the carb. I managed to buy all the parts I needed from the dealer today and installed the new stock pilot jet, float bowl gasket, throttle slide and diaphram, fuel supply elbow fitting ( brass!). Working on the intake seals now.

Spidey's suggestion is good, but the easier on-the-road check? Flip up the gas cap latch, and twist it to unlock the lid. Releases any vacuum that may be in the tank, and you don't have to fiddle with a hose and a clamp : )

Exactly what I did. Got the new manifold gaskets on and the carb back together but packed it in for the night.

I hope you didn't put the stock size jet back in. Stock was a 93 if memory serves, should be a 95.

The main jet was changed when I installed the cams and heads and pipe years ago. I put everything back together and still the same problem. Got the carb off again and going back in and looking at it closer this time. Found one of the breather hoses cracked and possibly the voes hose cracked at the end. Also going to take the intake manifold off again and look for cracks/leaks. Maybe compression test too.

New manifold gaskets,carb seal,plugs,checked float setting, etc. I think it might be the gigs module or timing cup/pickup. Got it loaded in the truck to take it to the dealership. I will let you guys know how it turns out.

Update on my bike.dealership says it is the module. Got a SE used module on EBay on the way. Didn't think it would be the module so soon as I only have 6,000 kms on this one. Thought it would be something else a bit trickier to diagnose. Just as well I took it in to the dealership as I would have replaced everything else electrical but the module. I will post again when I get her home and give it a good run to confirm that it is repaired.
