Hello everyone, before you old timers flame someone with the common "use the search function", I have. If you know of a particular thread that covers the topic just direct me that way. You may have a different way of searching or something that led you too where the answer was. With that said, my issues is a no start and fouled plugs instantly. I know fuel injection pretty well. Im just seeing if some older Buell guys know of a particular hidden fix type thing so I don't chase my tail. The intake temp sensor has thrown a current code. I will attempt to fix that this weekend. Past that the weird part is it reads 26 C which is almost 80 F and the engine temp sensor is at -20C which is about 15F, that was pretty close to the actually temperature when I took the readings. It was 30F out. The TPS is at 10% still which I know is wrong but I cant do a "correct" TPS reset til I can get it to operating temperature. The cold start enrichment seems waaaay too high. The one annoying part is that someone installed a power commander. It looks like if I just unplug the injectors from it and put them back to the stock ecu injector ports I should be able to remove that. It ran fine a week ago with it but I understand for diag removing all aftermarket/non oe stuff is best. Any advice is appreciated.

The old guys won't flame, they will just help. Sounds like you already found the problem, a bad temp sensor, and have a good plan to go from there.

The only other thing about the older fuel injected bikes is that they could take some time to "reset" after being FUBAR.

Thanks for the quick response. Didn't mean to sound snotty or anything. It just all too common to shun someone else whom may have had a problem finding a more direct answer to a question. Reset as in like what calculations its going to use on cold starts? Or just to run right in general after throwing a code?

Go ahead and do a TPS reset cold after you get the other fixes done,you have to start somewhere,then take it for a 10-15 minute ride above 3000 rpm to let the AFV get where it wants to be and then do another TPS reset.
My X1 AFV like to be at 100-104.
The S3 ran best at 108-110.


I've never checked cold start enrichment in cold temps but at room temp both my tubers would usually be in the 160/170 range.

Yes, you simply disconnect it from the fuel injectors and plug the stock harness back in. It isn't worth the hassle on tuber DDFI, and almost always fails to make them run better. Prior to ECMSpy, or even the advent the OEM race ECM, it may have been a good option (I bought one before the race ECM came out) but it surely isn't now. Not knocking power commanders in general, just for the tuber application.

The DDFI system is "dynamic" so a recalculate may be in order. typically with a cold engine the temp from the ecm will be close on the temp sensors. and AFAIK all are in deg C

Depending on the fault it may have skewed the fueling adjustments which will self correct
if you have ECM Spy you can re-set the AFV and all should be well

Keep us posted on your progress.

Oldog- So if its say 60F out and I reset the AFV and do a TPS to the factory spec it, by computer looks like she should run right? Ive got good compression and spark so I have to assume its only a fuel issue. I was going to dynamic time it this weekend until all this stuff happened.

Hootowl- I think Ill take your route after I take it out, Ive never really like after market tuners anyways.

I'm using mine to take up space in my garage. Can't bring myself to junk it, since it's isn't actually broken.

PC for Buell worked--- if the tuner did not mess with learned fuel area-- if he did, the first ride the AFV would skew and Bam--- blame the Power Commander. But ECM Spy works so much better! Constant fouling almost always a bad head temp sensor. Do a TP reset to about 6.1 or so and reset AFV to 100. Another possibility is with TP at 10% it was looking a a cell rich enough to foul under start-up.

Wow, just looked at your pics!! -10c for temp, and then AFV was at 114.5 so it was adding 14.5% more fuel on top of everything else! Multiple problems, temp sensor looks to be bad and then something caused a lean spot in learned fuel area of 14.5%--- look at intake seals.

Firemanjim- Would it be getting the info of an intake leak from the 02? Since it doesnt have a flow meter or map sensor? Just curious as to how the computer would end up seeing it. Could a missing/bad exhaust gasket cause that by creating a down draft into the exhaust making the 02 think there is a ton of air and to add fuel? Reason I ask is last Sunday my exhaust nuts came loose and I run a mostly open exhaust so took me sitting at a light and noticing my leg on fire(not literally) to realize something wasn't right. Rode to the nearest auto zone and got some new nuts.

O2 sensor is what ecu uses, in the learned fuel area it wants to see a target of 14.5- 15.1 AFV and then applies any changes it makes here to entire map, so your open exhaust may have caused this.Still look at other things we mentioned.

Another question. What kind of voltage at cranking have you guys gotten. I noticed I drop below 7 and that doesn't seem normal.

My right inner thigh consistently feels like a chunk of pot roast, any time it's warmer than about 38° out. I think it's pretty normal for these bikes.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I got her running over the weekend. Reset AFV and TPS new plugs and loaner battery and fired right up. Does anyone know if a 8 1/8 inch wide battery will fit in the tray of an X1? If someone could measure real quick if they have access that would be great.
