Im in the process of saving an S2 from close to the grave. In the process I have found that my motor has case damage that is JB WELDED for repair and I am unsure of the integrity. getting ready to purchase a 98 S3 motor with the thunderstorm heads that does not have the 2.5 inch collector and exhaust muffler....what kind of issues would I have running the 2.0 inch exhaust header and muffler.. I have a supertrapp with 14 discs right now bolted to the stock S2 motor that I could bolt up to the 98 s3 motor...do I NEED the 2.5 inch exhaust system or will this work and I am just giving up a little HP/Torque? funds are tight and I need to keep every spare dollar available for build...I would certainly get around to buying the 2.5 and new muffler down the road but if its a place I can safely without issue bypass right now it would sure help funnel funds to other areas...if its critical...well there goes Christmas money! ; )

Jolly I think that is the European configuration, thunderstorm head with a 2 inch collector or maybe the one for Oz. You might need to make a carb jet change but it should work.

I run a bone-stock S2 exhaust on my S2...with thunderstorm top end, X1 cams, S1W race ignition, and rejetted stock carb.

Zero issues.

Since you're "local area" same jetting should work or be close, though I don't have stock exhaust I'll be using the supertrapp starting with 14 discs I guess....? What do you recommend I start with? (Cv carb)... I figured it would work fine.....

I've swapped between the 2" and 2 1/2" on a '99 S3 and there's not much in it... Funnily enough the stock muffler with the 2 1/2" system works VERY well, especially down low.

I've also got a stock '99 X1 motor in my '98 1200S sportster and have run a couple of different exhausts on it with reasonable success , all of them smaller than the 2 1/2" Buell system. Keep in mind I think it's only the collector box that's different, the header pipes are the same diameter. They may be a little bigger on the race system but I can't remember.

I wouldn't worry about it. Put your funds into more sensible areas and keep your eyes open for a system you like later

As previously stated 2" is std Euro & Oz the difference is at the collector.

As I understand it (& I may be way off) the 2.5" gives slightly more hp but slightly less torque than the 2" & the Bikes with the 2" have higher final drive ratio to use the torque.

Either system should bolt straight up as the head tube diameters are identical, as are the fixing points.

Thanks all! I knew it would bolt up, just wasn't sure on how the motor would respond or if it would induce any issues.... Motor is going in my S2 that I'm trying to save from PO.... CV carb, supertrapp muffler.... Now I just need to sort how many discs in the muffler and jetting.....

I know I own 24 discs for my old Supertrapp...I think it was happiest with 45/190 and either 14 or 18 discs and an open endcap.

It won't give you any issues that can't be tuned out with patience and time. You won't break anything.
