So im sure this has been done before and there might be a kit you can buy but i wanted a project. So basically i got tired of my x1 over heating. i rode in NYC over the weekend and it was about 85 degrees out and with all the stop and go and minor traffic we hit, the buell wasnt happy at all. It got really hot, the light didnt come on but i could tell that the motor and trans were not happy with the heat. So i went home and fabbed this up. i got some sheet metal from home depot, made some mounts and got a 120 mm 12V power supply fan that pushes out about 160 cfm. Its wired to a seperate toggle switch so i can turn it on and off as i like. And its hard t tell in the pic but the front corner/lip is bent out a bit to scoop the air in when moving.the whole project cost about $25-$30. It blends in well an the air flow is directed right in between the two cylinders. What do you think? |

its sort of slick, but unfortunately its not going to do you much, if any good. |

im watching. curious what others say i have no use for it (drag only for the tuber), but I like the idea of what you did and that its DIY curious if it actually does anything |

One of my FB buds has a fan on his Buell. I'll see if I can find his user name here on BWB. I can get my M2 to run 20 deg cooler by making sure I use ethanol free premium. learned that one the hard way |

its too small to move enough air to do any good. Does it push or pull? If it pulls, it will not pull any air across the engine. If it pushes, 160 cfm is like blowing on it with your lips. In any case, the obstruction you have created will negate any positive effects of the fan by restricting the free flow of natural circulation that is dissipating the heat. Convert 100 HP to btu/h (assuming 50% engine efficiency) and see just how much heat we are talking about. If you are overheating in 85 degree temps, you need to have your bike looked at, maybe richen the mixture and get an external oil cooler. |

the fan is not small by any means. the fan pushes the air from the outside through the 2 cylinders and out the other side. And i can assure you that it blows alot harder than what you can create with your lips lol. you can easily feel the breeze on the other side of the bike even with the intake in the way. (my air box is off). and like i said before the front end is pulled out like a scoop to grab the air coming in from the front. Its similiar to the one american sport bike sells but mine has the scoop and theirs is cut off. My buddy i was riding with has a 2012 monster 796 and his temp gauge was reading hot as well. Like i said, my bike wasnt "overheating" the light never went on. but there was a little knocking when starting in first and it would rev high for a little when coming to a stop. then i would let it sit for a couple mins and it was fine. also 100 HP is roughly 254443.3 Btu/hr |

There is a Buell kit to put a fan in that same spot. It was OEM on Japanese tubers because of the low octane rating of the gasoline available there. The fan blows on the intake manifold, was designed to cool the intake manifold, and nothing else. However, it does move air between the cylinders, and it does throw off quite a bit of heat. The OEM fan has a thermal switch that bolts to the top of the front rockerbox. I can tell you that while idling on a hot day, the fan will come on, and then go off, so it is cooling the engine, even though that was not the intent. I have no idea what the CFM rating is, but given the noise it makes vs. that of a PC cooling fan, I would have to say it is significantly higher. American Sport Bike still carries them. I would buy the one for the S3, since you've removed your left side scoop. FYI, this is cheaper than the HD dealers used to sell them. I paid $250 over a decade ago. http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/17576.html |

You could get an XB oil cooler kit from an ebay salvage place and use that also. It would probably be a straightforward fabrication. |

I've used a few of these in industry to start a cooling fan. These are intended to switch 120V, you might need a relay depending on your 12V load http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/White-Rodgers/ 3F11-120/?qs=%2fha2pyFadugASaaKVbzQ8fzFReK51ONglPJ dlBMlvEBpBxzuowijCQ%3d%3d |

I had a Buell one on my old X1W and it never, ever went on. Who knows, maybe it was DOA! |

Loud fans save lives LMAO. And the X1's OEM left side scoop cools the motor/intake manifold better than a fan.}} |

I like the work and IMO how can it not help! The factory airbox will only cool when you are moving! So when you are standing still the fan moves air correct thats 100% more then the airbox at a stand still may need more cfm but I am no expert. |

^This. The bike is fine when moving, its just the stopping and very slow traffic thats an issue. and like i said, it was just a cheap project to keep my busy. It is "scooped" a little to draw in air and the fan is directed directly at the intake manifold. I dont see how this could not help at all. And this is a power supply fan not just a PC fan. it bows alot harder than any of the fans in my PC. But i guess it is in the same realm of computers. either way i can get another fan thats at 241 cfm if i need to. |

Maybe a dummy forcewinder style inlet to that fan would look better and balance up the look of the bike |

good idea if you ride in heavy traffic slow, stop start. seen a big inch big twin with a cooling fan that had a polished billet cover looked ok, helped when it was ridden in traffic. the XB Buell has a thermo fan that comes on when temp goes higher. |
