I've been itching to paint the sub-frame to match the black frame on my X1 but have been too worried to screw it up. Does anyone have a DIY on how to get the sub-frame ready for paint and what paint to use? Am I better off to take it off and have a professional do the job? My painting abilities are within a rattle can range...
Thanks.

The OEM coating is powder coat, as is the frame. I'd take it to a shop that can powder coat it. No prep necessary. They will bake off the old coating and apply new.

I've often wondered what one would look like polished and anodized.

Take them the whole bike so they can see what level of matte the frame has on it.

OOPS!

Yeah that's it , Match the frame. NO rattle cans . You will not be happy with the results unless you use Quality paint or powder coating.

Looks like for me the black powder coat is the way to go. Thanks for all the input.

I did a flat black powdercoat on mine, I'm really happy with the results and it's very durable.
The worst part was taking the factory clear powdercoat off.

when i bought my X1 the tail was already powdercoated black... I wanted it to match the tank, so I ended up painting the tail when i painted the rest of the bike-

powdercoated black

Purp - The first picture is exactly the look I'm after. I think it just somehow balances the color spread across the bike front to back.
Just out of curiosity, what would be a fair price to pay a shop to get it powder coated?

I would say anywhere from $70-$100...

I have not used these guys and they are horrible at getting back to you if you EMAIL them.... but they look like they are fairly close to you

Ive got a really good shop I use locally, you wouldn't know it by looking at the front door, but I have always been happy with their work and they treat me very well...must be because I keep bringing them stuff and always pay cash.... If you find its ridiculously expensive and for some reason find its cheaper to mail it to me I will take care of it for you and return ship it. you pay, Ill do the running....

I did mine in gloss black and polished the Pegasus out then had it taped off so that it really "pops"...

Nice work Jolly I want to outline mine in black when I find the right guy to stripe it for me. I want to highlight the Buell on my pulley cover brace as well in Yellow so it stands out.

I am gonna covet that fairing just so you know..

Purpony What can I say your bike is flawless. Keep up the good work my brother..

X1 rider another clean machine.. I like it too..

Just love the looks of these Tubers, I always thought I wanted a Ducati Monster but these Tubers are doing it for me right now..

Arizona, you've really built a nice bike, I watched from the start. Impressed with how fast you turned it and how nice it turned out!!

Ive got a yellow seat cowl cover..kinda beat up, but if you think you have a way to copy it or use it as a mold I can send it to you....its from the euro components "collection" cheap abs plastic but it could be used as a shell for a mold....

I also have an old aluminum race hump that might be able to be turned into a mold for a good custom seat. I bought a seat pan once, cut the rear foam off and thought I could use the aluminum hump to fiberglass to the seat pan, then use the front half of the seat and cover it...but I ran out of energy on that one....

if you've got fiberglass or CF skill and could produce at least two....its yours work with......
