I got a updated shift kit, just wondered if it can be set eather one down four up, or both one up four down? the directions show how to set it for one down four up, but it looks like it would be possible to set it reverse if wanted, am i right?

I seem to recall when I was fitting mine that this was the case... but I never tried it. Sounds like a good way for me to blow a motor... : (

That would be a gp shift style. You could always test it out while you have it apart.

Yes, you are correct. But like Bill said, it's a good way for me to blow a motor. You may be able to keep it straight in your head. I know I wouldn't be able to.

I recall seeing someone on here (if im not mistaken) who had taped "GP SHIFT!" onto his top triple or something as a reminder.
Of course, in an emergency situation, if you havent been doing it long, that probably wouldnt work, muscle memory would revery back to 'standard'

Mine's set up as a reverse shift with a direct lever...no linkage. I learned to ride that way and having no linkage is less effort with a lot less slop. I've rode a lot of standard shift pattern bikes, too and it's pretty easy to go from one to another.

thanks everyone, i've never used reverse, but my friend i drag race against in compition, loves reverse shift. thought i might try it but have fitted it one down four up for now.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I know someone will : ) ) but isn't the GP shift so you can upshift while turning left REAL hard? How does it help while drag racing?

You are correct, when leaned over far enough, you'll be dragging the shifter and won't be able to get you toe under the lever.

I mistakenly set a bike up for GP shift, luckily it was a two stroke (old Kawi triple) so when I sent the rpm into the stratosphere on a "up shift" I didn't bend/brake anything.

It is difficult to remember, but then again I've seen people transition effortlessly between right and left side shift bikes.

Whenever I ride an older Triumph/BSA/Norton, I always "shift" the brake pedal a bunch of times before I figure it out.

I guess it's up to the end user.

It's easier or quicker for me to step down to upshift then trying to get your toe under the shifter and pull up to upshift. Especially when you launch laying on the tank and both feet off pegs.

That makes sense. Easier to push down than pull up.

Rick a , were did you get the direct leaver?
i was looking at that myself.
Hootowl your correct it's more advantage for taking a left hand corner fast and being able to upsift while exiting the corner. i have no problem lifting up the leaver with my dyna, drag racing, but some people are always looking for improvement, i suppose you would just have to try it, i don't drag race the Buell just ride it, but that wrap round shift had to go.
just thought it looked like this new shift kit i got could be easy set up reverse or normal. just asked incase it was a mistake to try.

well i changed it to reverse shift, one up four down. i road it in city traffic lot of traffic lights. & i like it, very quick shifts going up. i would say difference between how it is with this shift linkage in reverse & the wrap around like it was, would be half a second in quarter mile. thats if the 60ft time is quick too.

Mine is set-up for use with the old Race Dept. factory rearsets. It's too short for the stock location. Storz Performance makes them. The current lever is a combination of Blast and X1 levers grafted together. The Blast section gives a wider range of adjustment over the fixed spline Storz set-up.

Sorry, I don't know what the part number is. AmericanSportbike.com says the kit is obsolete with no replacement, and that they're sold out. However, the kit is just made up of other parts, which may still be available.

I've been riding with a 1-up, 4-down pattern ever since I put the 01+ shifter on my X1. I swapped the Uly shifter around as well as soon as I bought it. I've since sold the X1, but my Uly is still GP shift and I now have a DRZ that would be impossible to switch without machining a custom shift drum (which I've actually looked into and it wouldn't be that much $$ : D) I have very little problem jumping back and forth between the two bikes. When I do mess up, it's on the DRZ. 1-down 4-up just doesn't make sense to me any more.
