For instance, when just tooling around town, or stuck on a 40mph stretch of road. Do you chug around like on a Harley? I sort of like the sound and feel of the 3500-4000 range even when I don't need the power. But I don't want to add use more engine life than I need to. Do you have an RPM sweet spot under light throttle settings?

I'm gradually getting familiar with the big V-twin thing after years of Japanese in-line 4s.

Curious about everyone's thoughts. Thanks!

Don't base it on "engine life usage".

I was on my S1W yesterday for a nice long aggressive ride on Maryland back roads. Didn't really like going below 4k, for smoothness and power.

More revs = more oil flow.

More revs = more speed = more air cooling ; )

Cruising around town, I never let it drop below 2500. As soon as I feel it lug because of additional throttle...I downshift.

Really want to confuse yourself? Ride an 1125. Nothing quite like a twin with a 10,500 redline!! : )

I seem to prefer around the same range as you. My bike seems to really smooth out around 3500.

I've been getting accustomed to the low revving nature of the HD engine myself and had been thinking about asking a related question, what is considered "lugging" these engines? Mine seems comfortable pulling pretty low RPM, but I don't want to risk premature wear from lugging it too much either.

Yeah, I grew up learning that lugging an engine was about the worst thing you could do to it. But I hear these Harley guys lugging their big farm tractors all the time, as if they're supposed to. But what actually first caught my attention about Buell was driving next to one on the highway and hearing that sweet higher-RPM V-twin sound. I was hooked from that moment!

I had no idea those 1125s revved 10k. Holy cow!

my 96S1 has 97,000 miles, 90,000 miles are mine. I have had to adjust my rpm thinking with my CR, all 17,800 of it's miles are mine.

On the CR I have learned to keep it at or near 4,000 rpm's, anything less and I downshift or pull the clutch in.

On the S1 I have learned to keep it at or near 2,500 rpm's, anything less and I downshift or pull the clutch in.

i like 3,500 to 4,000 rev too, as thats nice and easy on the bottom end roller bearings. don't know if i'm right or wrong but i also use redline motocycle oil. i've done a lot of miles since the 70's on HD's.

3500 and up. But I find myself at 2500 to 3000 often putzin' around town.

2800 to 4000 on my S2T.Above 3000,really 3000 to 5000,it means business.

3500 most comfortable; 3000 minimum for steady-state in town.
It's rare to go over 4500.
I learned how to drive on a Ford Model 'B' tractor, crank start.

My 1997 S3T likes 60 - 85 MPH and 3K - 4K RPM ...

The on the cam RPM is 3K ...

My 2002 M2L likes 60-85 MPH, as well. I typically keep it 3K - 4K RPM.

I rarely let it go below 2500 RPM when moving, although it still does run ok down to about 2200.

I would ad that S2's run 29 tooth front pulleys.The Buells I've had that ran 27 tooth pulleys ran at a higher RPM.I find the 29T to be more relaxed.If I ever get my Baker 6 speed sorted it will be even more relaxed.

Think some models got a 29T(my 1997 S3T) and others got a 27T ...

The 27T is the factory's way of getting cheap torque ..

Before I put the factory tach kit on I lugged the bike way too much. My min is 2500 ( in 2nd my town speed limit fits at 25 mph ) in-town usually never below 3k

If I'm stuck at 40 with no real traffic, I just let it loaf along in top gear.
Seems most happy on the highway around 75.

i was going to ask something alone the lines of this too, my 99 x1 seems to idle high but maybe its just me, when i first start and ride it idles around 1100 to 1500 but after riding and it gets hot it idles at 2000/2200 rpm, is this normal or bad? my x1 is carb converted also.

Agreed. Mine seems happiest with the idle set to just under 1000. Can't start it "hands off" though.
Have to crack the throttle just a tiny bit until it sounds right.

Ya i figure it was 2 high but i recently just got the tach working properly, it is now set at about 1050 give or take.

i cruise at about 2500/3000 and try not to take it much above 4k, its really screaming at 4000.

Really? You guys really run them THAT low ALL the time?

I don't bounce it off the rev limiter and I don't take it up at every shift, but geeesh, it runs and sounds SO good when you run it up a bit. I keep mine below 6k but 4 to 6K is where this engine seems to be singing a wonderfully happy song. Just tooling around I keep it below 4, but when riding it in the fashion for which the bike was intended I enjoy the free revving nature of this engine.

Does the rev the bike feels happy at get effected if your useing 2" collector stock muff, of 2" collector sports muff or 2 1/2" collector Sports muff?
just asking as want to learn.
i have 2 " collector sports muff on my bike, but a friend gave me a 2 1/2" collector race headers but i don't have a muff to fit. he also gave me a spare stock 2" collector head pipe thats as new.
