I didn't want to hijack Als thread so I started this one. I'm not trying to piss in anybody's cornflakes, but what is the benefit of CF. If the parts being replaced were made of metal, even aluminum I could see a significant weight savings. CF to replace plastics, I don't get it , aside from aesthetics. The price is just insane, I remember being at a dealer once going through their "clearance table" and I saw a CF belt guard for like $250, I ask the guy at the parts counter what the clearance price is and he says $250. I left it on the table!

women will spend $500 on a gaudy purse because it relates some sort of pecking order or status. designer jeans, gold trim and wheels on a honda car, $50 bottles of tequila, etc....we all spend money differently.

i have a $300 race air cleaner/breather setup that probably works no better than the buellistic-style breadbox snorkel re-do that essentially costs nothing.

quality carbon fiber will ALWAYS be cooler than abs plastic. i would love to have some, but my discretionary pile of cash is a very short stack.....maybe someday.

check out the new carbon fiber bimota. a $250 belt guard will seem like a deal in comparison

Nope, you'll never justify that kind of money to me for something that is essentially non functioning(non mechanical). If it only looks cooler then you can go on ebay and buy sheets of the CF look alike stickers. Hmmm, I just might do that, then i won't let anybody within 20 ft. so they won't know the difference. I would no sooner buy CF for my bike than gold trim for my car.

Checked out the DB7, very nice bike, entire body and tail section CF. OK, you make a CF tail section that replaces the hunk of aluminum under my ass and I might buy it.

It's 'race tech' on the street.
Therefore 'cool'.
Old racer saying, "If you take care of the ounces, the pounds will take care of themselves..."
If you have to ask, you're probably too smart to spend the money on crap like this.
Me, I have aluminum billet mirror stalks, and a carbon fiber heat shield, that I took off completely, to save weight. It really does weigh less, too, there on my shelf.

And don't get me started on Titanium, either.

Plastic is light, carbon weights nothing. The carbon fiber airbox cover I had on my XB probably weighed about as much as a sheet of paper.

I did it for the look, the weight savings, as small as it was, is just a bonus.

I picked up an X1 undertail off ebay a couple years ago. $70 and I got what I paid for, and that's ok. I don't need the rear tire to sling mud onto a $300 quality cf undertail.

You're right Brett - it isn't logical to dress up a 15lb chunk of aluminum with a few ounces of cf.

I'm not thrilled with the quality of the factory cf bits on my bike, none have held up well at all, maybe it's the high elevation and additional UV exposure. Money would have been spent better elsewhere, however, the LP sub-fender has held up very well and weighs a fair bit less than the stock fiber glass part it looks to be molded from, less unsprung weight I guess. One of these days I'll probably black it all out.

THe only trouble I have wrt the Buells' and CF is you have to replace ALL of the black plastics with Carbon for the best effect.

I'm seriously contemplating Al's dealio.

The best affect i've had with Carbon fiber is with the Blackstonetek brand CF wheels ($1700 ea.)i used on my 996.And a truckload of money on doing the rest of IT up in CF.

Patron Anejo tequila($50)!!!!

Please, tell me you used that 996 for track racing, $3400 just for wheels!!!!!! Curious, what was the affect from all the CF replacement, was it faster times at the track, post some numbers!

If they still sold Carbon Fibers wheels for tubers I would buy a set. Did you read Dymag just went out of business? I was trying to find a set for my M2 street bike. Nobody makes them anymore.

I know where there is a set hiding brand new (Not CF, I don't think they made them back then in CF)...But I'm not telling... ;D

(And no, not in my possession)

I was going to buy a set of PM wheels, because they look nice, but then I found out they are HEAVIER than the stock cast wheels. I read in some bike mags that the carbon fiber wheels had a problem with sudden catastrophic failure and the race bikes only used them a couple of times before they threw them in the trash.

Brinnutz, ya tease, do you mean Dymags, but not Carbon? I know they made mags, and forged aluminum. I'd likely take any, right now.
The catastrophic crash scenario, hmmm, I won't say it never happened, but I even if it did, I don't care. Everybody to whom I mention I ride motorcycles tells me about someone they know who had a catastrophic crash (regardless of wheels...)

Rocketman (who was banned from here recently) has had Dymag CF wheels on his S1 for 8 years with no. Issues.

"Rocketman (who was banned from here again recently)..."

There, updated in red for accuracy. Dude can't play by the rules or something, there's been others who've worn out there welcome over the years. He's got a beautiful S1 that he's spent a lot of time and money on - lots of carbon, nickel plated frame, pumped up motor - it's sweet. Anyway, for some the internet is a useful communication tool, for others just an outlet for their pent up frustrations.

CF is a lot like hanging a nice picture in your living room. Did you really intend to leave that big wall bare like that? If you're gonna spend some money on your bike it might as well make it weigh less or perform better...
