I have a 1999 M2 that came to me with a straight pipe. Its one piece welded from the exhaust ports to the tip of the outlet.I can't just go get a used M2 muffler laying around cus now I would have to change the headers too Arrrgh. The bike NEEDS to be quieter!!! My son leaves for work at 5:30 AM and he is waking everyone for a 1/4 mile radius. Although no one beat on my door , I fear its just days away LOL.... My thought on the cheap would be to weld in a short automotive silencer and maybe cut the db level a bit. You can get stainless units for 20-40 bucks.... anybody try this? I know it's a sacrilege and I ought to go out and pay $500 for a "setup", but I'm not going to dump mega bucks in a $2000 motorcycle. I'm just looking for quiet on the cheap. There are many many units like the one here in stainless, I think this one was $28 with free shipping. Anybody try this with any success or am I just the only cheap SOB around? <br> <img> | ||

Did you look through and/or search the Knowledge Vault? I know there's various postings of automotive mufflers used, from 'cherry bomb' glass packs to Flowmasters. Just find a shape that will fit, and away you go. Make sure the mount is secure though... | ||

Could you get a used M2 muffler and cut the straight pipe off the header so the muffler could fit in place of the straight pipe? Used stock mufflers are cheap and fit nicely using Buell stock brackets. | ||

I don't know what kind of header this is you have...interesting:  Weird stuff, just post a WTB stock exhaust thread. | ||

if you look at the pic in my profile you will see the collector is almost at the front of the muffler. Any after market muffler I get will have to be a 2.5" slip on or welded at that point. My two brackets that are holding the pipe are 2.5", that's why I thought a shorty glass pak or something would go in there and I could still use the brackets that are there. I have contacted a couple of those guys that are selling the stainless shorty's but they have no idea as to the muffling ability of their product($28 and support too, I guess not LOL). The whole idea is to make it neighborhood friendly and right now it will wake the dead, especially loud at low rpm full choke in the morning, really annoying type of loud as opposed to a "cool rumble" | ||

That looks like a stock M2 1998-99 header, they were steel not stainless steel. Wait, I just looked at the profile picture. That might be a Kooks header, Spiderman has one on Mary Jane, it looks very simular. Brad | ||

Guell............... I think your right . I did a quick search and it came back with "loudest Buell pipe ever", If loud saves lives, I'm gonna live to 130", " Sounds like a pro street, my neighbors are gonna hate me"......... yep that's the one I got alright , will just have to get a better close up and verify for sure. Promise I won't cut on it if it's a good thing and not just a noise device. LOL | ||

If you wish to lower the DB level there is a trick for that pipe... It may also give a little of the mid and bottom end power you've been missing. But, a replacement is the BEST way. | ||

Ok, I have put the hacksaw down !! Dr. Hack...... is there a baffle I can shove in to quiet it down? I looked on line and most of what I saw were "pipe specific" for the Harley crowd. A couple of options in the Hot Rodding arena, but pricey..........what do you suggest? Thanks | ||

If you want to put a baffle in it, you just need to find one that matches the diameter of the outlet. Should be able to do it easy, and it would require you to drill one, small, easily hide-able hole. | ||

Brinnutz ......... Just read your profile and you like them to hear you coming aye, well this is the pipe for you. I can hear my son on his way to work in the morning till he crests the hill 3/4 of a mile away. It's Major offensive and won't be long till the cops are all over him like stink. If I can't get an easy baffle fix or something I might take you up on that. | ||

Roger that. I've got a Vance & Hine slip on, but no elbow for it. I'm sure someone here could provide the elbow, and I can even help you find a stock header...Whichever way you'd like to go. =) And yes, I have no qualms of waking people up. They can kiss my ass. LOL | ||

This is embarrassing............ I got down on the floor so I could be "one with machine" to measure the pipe ID and OD to make sure what ever baffle I found today would fit when I got it home. While laying there on my ass next to the bike my fingers go around the end of the pipe and I feel a screw .....WTF is that and I get in and take a close look....sure enough its a small screw that is holding the ALREADY IN PLACE BAFFLE  I feel so stupid,............ but on the other hand I'm on a cloud as the baffle that is in there probably lost all its packing miles ago....I haven't got it out yet, can't find my slide hammer to hook it and tap it out. The first feel of anything in there is about 5 inches up the pipe. I'll report back what I find in there...... now where is that slide hammer , I just used it 5-10 years ago , gotta be here somwhere ?  | ||

You can try taking the screw out and starting the bike - it might just push the baffle out on it's own - I know my old Sportster will do it when I slip one in a little too far. | ||

Pm'ed ya. But I would repack the baffle you have. I recommended a twisted steel type baffle thinking you had none. It's a flat sheet of steel exactly the ID of the pipe, twisted. The tighter the twists and longer the sheet the quieter it gets. Oh, and, the more back pressure is built. Crude, but cheap and easily tuned and can be removed. | ||
