Just bought a 99 X1. The bracket that wraps
around the muffler and bolts to the Z bracket was broken. I put a new one on three weeks ago. Now that one is broken as well. Am I missing something? Is this a common problem?

Yes they are flimsy and crappy. Call a diesel performance shop and get an exhaust tip clamp, They are beefy enough to hold the can up. I have broken 3 clamps and one z bracket. I finally made a new Z bracket out of 1/4" steel and bought some clampco brand clamps. So far so good. http://www.clampco.com/

Make a new one!!

1. Get some steel plate 1/4" thick

2. Use the old bracket as a template, and cut out the pieces with you weapon of choice. (I used A die grinder) But a saw or some thing more accurate may be used for better edges

3. Now pay attention to the way you are going to weld them up! Study the old z bracket so that you weld the pieces together correctly, If you weld them wrong (such as the wrong side of the pieces overlapping on the wrong side can cause the clamp to be 1/4" off center and will do bad things to your exhaust studs)

4. weld it all up and do a little on the fly modding of the bracket. I used a die grinder and a bench vise and also rotating grinder for smoother grinds.

5. Pay special attention to where the strap goes over the notch on the clamp (you want to smooth this spot so it is shaped like 2 little ramps or the clamp will be cut through in a week) Some black paint to finish it up.

6. Install ride and enjoy

Does clampco make a direct replacement? Which clamp did you buy? Thanks for the help!

after breaking the stock one I upgraded the whole muffler to a supper trapp and once again ran over the hanger and almost the muffler too. Then I just bought the vance and hines and have not had one problem with it, I picked it up on here for like a hundred bucks shipped

I have the supper trap and it's heavy as hell. I had a vance and hines CF can. But it blew up! I loved that muffler.

When I bought my super trap they sent a bracket that lasted 2 days -- Luckily I was in Colorado Springs across the street from a dry cleaner who was nice enough to supply a coat hanger as a replacement. When I got back to Denver I called SuperTrapp and talked to tech support and they sent me a new improved mount that's gone 5000 miles and looks better as well --One of the reasons I went to an aftermarket was all the problems with the stock mountings. But I'm a firm believer that the front improved Y hanger I added shortly after the last failure is a big reason the failures went away--

""A hundred bucks shipped"? Was it used?"

Yes it was, but in pretty good condition other than needing repacking ($24 from American Sport Bike)
I just wanted it out of the Garage!

Glad you're enjoying it Jay : )

As for exhaust durability, you can't beat a D&D. Just pick the thing up (HEAVY) and you know it's bulletproof. The sound will scare children and small dogs, but you'll never have to repack it, and none of the mounts will break.
