I have an engine light and the battery is being drained.

Following the manual, I've tested the (new) battery, regulator and stator. Everything passes. The stator is pushing out 52 amps but I'm still only getting at best 13.5 at the battery when running at 2000RPM.

So it must be the VR right?

I have a strange grounding issue involving powder coating my swing arm mount that I've had to workaround (secondary ground to primary case bolt).

13.5 is too low at 2000 RPM? I think mine puts out 13.9 at 3000.

IIRC, mine runs 12.5 - 12.9 volts at 2000rpms according to ecm spy... 11k miles with the original battery and yet to have any problems.

oh, and BTW, its an 02 X1 with very little mods... in case you needed to know.

How on earth did you manage to measure 52 amps?

amps is the wrong term. I shouldn't type when I'm half sleep. I was under the impression the battery should be reading 14@ 2000rpm. I'm mistaken?

Find out what the check engine light is for by jumping the 4 spade terminals and reading the trouble code.

Correct voltage numbers are all in the FSM.

The ECMSPY readings are not reliable.
My meter was reading 12.9 right on the battery while ECMSPY reading was 11.2.

to get the trouble codes - jump the terminals, or get the trouble code dongle from ironmachine, or read them the easiest way - ecmspy

I have an O1' x1, and my battery was getting drained when I rode it. I would keep a trickle charger on it all the time, and when I would ride a long time the turn signals would quit working, the neutral light would as well. I unhooked the voltage regulator, took a volt ohm meter and hooked it into the voltage regulator, and grounded it right to the voltage regulator and read the meter. With the bike completely off it should not read anything, mine was giving me a reading. So I changed the VR and totally fixed the problem. If you have a service manual, it tell you completely how to do it. If you dont have a manual let me know and I may be able to make copies and email them to you if you need me to. Good Luck.

It's looking like its a grounding issue. (added a grounding wire and most of the symptoms are gone.) I'll get the codes hopefully this evening. I also have an ECM Spy cable on its way. I have powder coating between my swingarm mount and the engine insulating the grounding. Any suggestions on alternative places to ground the battery until I can get around to pulling my swingarm and removing the paint?

You could run another wire from the ground boss on the swingarm block under the bike to the bracket that holds the VR

14-ET (engine temp)
15-air intake temp
16-battery voltage
23-front injector
32-rear injector
33-fuel pump

wow... What does this have to do with battery charging issues? Could this be as side effect of the Power Commander?
