Hey guys, I did my first 100 miles of the season yesterday and had two annoying issues.

1. On a cold start (55 degrees outside) the bike just pops and runs like crap. At one point I had the air cleaner off and it was backfiring badly also. Last year I "modified" my WileyCo Exhaust and welded a pipe inside to eliminate the use of half the glass packing. It gave the bike more sound on WOT but now I am wondering if that may be causing the bike to run bad when cold. Is that a sign of running lean due to less restriction on the exhaust? A side effect is the bike is now faster though!

2. The transmission hates shifting into first gear. It gets better once the bike has been driven, but after being parked it just doesn't seem to lock into first gear. I have no problem shifting into second when cold though?

Any advice or help would be appreciated!

If it sat all winter without completely draining the fuel bowl, you have bad gas and/or varnish in the carb clogging up your jets. Pull it, clean it, and add some carb cleaner additive to the first 2 or 3 tanks of fuel this season. I have to do that to my S1W from time to time, it gets pissy if I don't pay enough attention to it : )

For the shifting, verify your clutch cable is properly adjusted. If it's a little out of whack, it gets more out of whack when cold and you get clunky shifting until it warms up.

Do you still have the boring stock muffler?
I would suggest trying that to see if it runs better.

The tranny issue to me sounds like the clutch might be dragging.
Perhaps adjust the cable to reduce the slack a bit?

Could be a lean pop, did you at least adjust the Idle Air Adjustment screw after the muffler mods? Or rejet? Many, if not most, people wind up changing the Low Speed jet, even with the stock muffler.

For 1st gear check the primary chain tension too, while you're down there checking that clutch cable adjustment.

My X1 was popping a little for first ride of season. I attribute it to sitting for months and possibly the Stabil. I am now on my third tank of gas and bike is running fine. I wouldn't be concerned unless it continues, though it might be due to the change in muffler. As for the trans, first ensure chain tension is correct. Second, check cable setting. I just put on a SS cable and my bike is shifting much smoother and w/ less effort. One of the better mods I've made. In theory if trans was fine last season and you've made no changes, s/be fine now. It wouldn't hurt to put in fresh trans fluid and lube the clutch cable.

The pop could be a lean condition caused by "crud" partially blocking a jet.

It so, some clean fuel and some Sea Foam additive might be a low-risk measure that could solve the problem.

My bike will run like crap if I haven't ridden it in a week or better. I don't think it has anything to do with the carb or funky gas. I've narrowed it down to the bike being a rotten b#$%^ or its possessed by Satan. I know this, because I had just rebuilt my completely and then, without running the bike at all, it sat for about 9 days and still ran like crap when I tried to ride it until I had put about 50 miles on it.(WTF!?!?!?)

Rejet and adjust air/fuel mixture. Lots of threads if you search about carb jetting. Lean and leaner with the air cleaner off makes sense.
