If you still have stock grips on your bike, take $15 to your nearest HD dealer and buy yourself a set of Buell traction grips immediately. Wow, these things feel good! Install takes about 20 minutes if you've never done it before. You'll need a box cutter to slice off the left grip, and a piece of sandpaper works great to remove the crusted up old glue. The whole right grip/throttle barrel assembly comes off as a unit with a couple of screws. | ||

WOW! That is good to know because I was considering replacing my stock grips soon. On a similar subject, has anyone installed heated grips? I know several items are available that will put a heating element under any grip. Just curious. | ||

Go to american sport bike and buy the pro grip gel grips the ones that cost $7.95 part # 5662. My hand use to go numb after about a 1/2 hour of holding a steady throttle with the stockers. With the gel grips i have not had a problem even after an hour with a steady throttle. For $7.95 you can't beat it they work great. (Message edited by paw on September 07, 2006) | ||

I like my traction grips, but the extra thickness makes me wish I had adjustable levers- I guess I need a pair of CRG levers to go with them! | ||

I have heater elements under my traction grips. I have this bad habit of wanting every addition to be very discrete so I've stalled a little while I decide where to put the switch and a relay. Fall is coming so I need to step it up. Don't really have a lot of free time, but I should get a window here soon. I'll report back in about a month. | ||

Easy_rider, I feel the same way about mods. I wouldn't say it's bad thing though! I have NO IDEA if this will work for you, as I have an XB, but if not maybe it'll spark another idea that you CAN use. I posted my switch install over on the Big, Bad, & Dirty section. I got some of traction grips today. The package said 96+ Buell. But they didn't fit my S2. Is the S2 the only Buell with 1" grips? I thought that if they would fit S1, S3, X1, and M2's then they would sit an S2 too. I hope they'll let me trade them in on some sporty grips... that is if I can find some that I like that don't cost over $50. | ||

Damn, I got the aerostitch heated grip kit and couldn't fit either grip over the element. Maybe its just operator error. On the throttle side, did you go under the plastic barrel, or pull the grip off the plastic and run it there? Oh yeah, I'm using traction grips | ||

M, I ran mine in between the plastic and the grip. Figured that both sides would heat a little more evenly that way. Like you, I was a little unsure what the 'right" way was, though. | ||

Got started. Windscreen removal gave me fits so I didn't get disassembled on Sunday. I'm going to have to remove the fairing to get where I want. Thinking back, I seem to remember taking a little off the plastic insert on the throttle side by scuffing it with some sandpaper. Just noticed I didn't answer which element I used. I bought my set from American Sportbike. The switch is huge, but there's a hole in the framework that supports the fairing of the S3's that fits the switch like it was meant for it. I bought the relay for those times when my fingers are warm but my mind is frozen. I'm hoping I find a spot under the dash that supports it. I'll take pics while I'm at it. | ||

It looks like the relay will tie wrap to the bracket that holds the clock in place. Had trouble locating a desirable spot to grab power and ground so I'm going to run lines back to lugs above the battery. Will post pics later this week. | ||

Don't really like where I'm getting power from, but they're finally usable. And TOASTY!!!!! Low level is almost enough. I'd put it on the high setting for a few minutes, put it on low for 10 or 15 and then back to a high boost. | ||

Well for the S2 riders I'll say that the HD 1.3 grips are nice. What sucks is that they cost a few bucks more than Buell's traction grips and they're just thinner diameter versions of the stock grips. Not much for style but still nice. They're also the only grips I could get from HD that were less than $50. | ||

I do really like the Buell Traction grips as well, but they seemed to wear down quickly. I need to replace mine after aprox 3k miles. Maybe I am hanging on too hard?  |
