I have a 1999 M2 that I just damaged the exhaust bushing on while attempting to change the transmission oil for the first time. Rather than replacing it, I figured I would just install the exhaust hanger retrofit kit from American Sport Bike.

So here's the question: Everywhere seems to list a different exhaust for the 99 M2 than for every other tuber. Why? Will the other ones not fit at all? After I upgrade the exhaust hanger, will I need a 99 M2 exhaust or a 00 M2 exhaust?

I'm also seeing a lot about 2.5" vs 2" inlet pipes. Which does my bike have? Which do the rest of the 99-02 tubers have? Which bikes used the other ones?

Finally, while I'm actually pretty happy with the look and power of the stock muffler, I wouldn't mind a better exhaust tone. At the same time, I don't want it -too- loud. Folks recomended the WileyCo exhaust or maybe a SuperTrapp, and I'm looking around for those. But is there something I could do to the stock can to make it a little rortier?

Anyone have a spare M2 exhaust laying around that I could take apart?

I am looking around in the archives and Knowledge Vault for the answers to these questions, but since I'm still pretty knew I'm having trouble tracking down what I need to know. Any help would be great!

I think the muffler for a 99 M2 is the same as the muffler on the 1999 X1 and S3 (the headers are slightly different - M2s don't need a fitting for an O2 sensor). Your 99 muffler should work with the updated Y-mount. Be aware the voltage regulator mounting is revised when you upgrade to the new mount.

99-02 tubers all use 2.5 diameter header collectors, but in 1999 they were painted black.

Keep searching the KV for tuber muffler mods... someone posted a diagram of how they cut open and modified the stock can for a deeper but not too loud exhaust note.

I used to have a diagram that I made of the stock exhaust. It is fairly simple to modify. All you have to do is cut off the Exit (at the weld) inside you will see a plate that redirects the gasses You can drill holes in this to let the gasses flow directly out (rather than changing directions). This will allow a more free flowing exhaust (performance gain??) and allow more noise (don't know how much). Then just weld the end back on, paint and mount. I think Buellistic added an exit (XB-ish).

Others should chime in and correct any of my mistakes...

Hm, So... I thought the X1 and the M2 used the same exhausts?

Can I put this on my bike?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=35573&item=458 2969929

How about after I upgrade the front exhaust mount to the Y hanger?

Thanks!

99 M2 Models had a black header. 2000 up had stainless. Mine had black painted stainless but I do not know if all came that way. I do know that 98 M2's did not have stainless headers.

Dave,
Only the 99 M2's had non stainless.
From 2000 on, all Buell's had stainless steel headers.
All mufflers from 2000 on were the same for all bikes.
The headers on the fuelies (X1 and S3) were different in that they had the O2 sensor bung.

According to my SM, the '99 had a 2" and '00-up had the 2.5... you might want to measure at the collector.

You shouldn't have a problem fitting whatever muffler to the upgraded hanger, basically it's the same as the earlier one with an extra urethane bushing outboard the tab that's welded to the pipe.

I had to enlarge the hole a bit in the tab when I updated my hanger. Then at a later time I pulled the whole exhaust apart, and it all went back together real easy with everything hanging loose.

Just make sure whatever can you get has a bracket near the tail to catch the two bolts that connect to the frame bracket under the primary. Unless you can rig something with the factory clamp/Z bracket.

As for sound you might want to hear the different cans before buying to get what you want.

the old front mounts went inside the two tabs on the muffler but the new "Y" one goes on the outside of the tabs with a tubular spacer in between.
The same muffler will fit both.

"According to my SM, the '99 had a 2" and '00-up had the 2.5... "

1999 models had a 2.5" collector, not a 2" collector. Amend your SM.

Maybe I should not have made it so confusing. The only deference between the 99 and the 00 up is a coating of black paint. Like I said mine was black painted stainless, not sure about all 99 M2's but mine is an early 99 so I have a good feeling that all 99's had stainless.

Dave,
Are you sure it's stainless?
The one's I've seen were steel.
They rust and everything!

I know that 98 models are steel and rust.. Mine is stainless and was just painted black. The black coating was getting chiped from stones and stuf and you could see bare metal, no rust, looks like stainless, and a magnet will not stick to it.. If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck. the Vance and Hinces exhaust was made of steel and it did rust..

I may have not read this thread well enough. I see now that the originally they were talking mufflers and it moved to headers and collector sizes. My comments were to the header and collector and color of 99 and 00 up Buell M2's.

Sofauxboho, I see no reason why that Wileyco muffler would not fit on your M2 with the updated hanger or the old hanger for that matter.

The 99 models I've seen had rusty headers too.

Hey.
All 99-02 headers for German(maybe all european?) models have a 2" collector
US models have 2.5" collectors.

Regarding my Cyclone parts catalog:

P/N S0101.R NZ. header
P/N S0106.R EU.JPN.AUS.header
Anyone knows P/N for US header?
Ralph

Sofaux - I bought that same Wileyco setup in CF from the same guy for my M2 last month. I absolutely love it.

I had the Stainless Specialties / Daytona Boss can that was so loud my riding cronies never wanted to be to my left - and these are all guys on Jap sport bikes with aftermarket cans.

Installing the Wileyco has put the fun back into my riding. It has a nice, deep bass sound that to me is just right.

I have the updated hanger, and that is what the elbow is made to fit. I don't know if it would work without it. I think that's why his listing says '01-'02.
