Star Trek had artificial gravity and inertial dampers. The ships are laid out to fit their warp bubbles. NASA has neither...... just a warp engine ( theoretical ) so the giant window & layout like an airplane in something that isn't meant to land is silly. Now, convert light into matter Jerry, Thunderstorms do indeed create matter from gamma rays. This was discovered about three years ago. What is special about the experiment described is that we now have a way of accomplishing the feat in a controlled environment. If we can raise the coupling of the gamma rays with the EM field, we can raise the efficiency of the process, creating more matter. If we can raise the energy of the gamma rays, we can create proton-antiproton pairs. If we can capture the positrons and antiprotons, which should not be difficult, and slow them down (which we have already done), we can produce anti-hydrogen. If we can use the Sun to directly supply the energy and source matter stream for the production of the gamma rays and the creation of the high density EM field, we suddenly have a worthwhile anti-matter production facility. I was just reading an article on RB-66 operations in the Cold War. The author describes the 35, 000 watt strobe lights used to take pictures at night and the photo flash "bombs" as being a major source of UFO reports in the mid 1960's.  Having been part of an inadvertent UFO incident at Daytona Beach back in (redacted) ( I think the statute of limitations is up.... ) where we were guerrilla parasailing New Years Eve.......... I can understand not making any public announcement. Shining a police car searchlight into a paracommander (round) parachute from below with the "jumper" dressed all in black..... a few hundred feet up on the beach past the condos & hotels at midnight generated hundreds of UFO reports as we saw on the news the next morning at the Ihop in Deland. The staff of the collegiate skydiving nationals knew nothing. | ||

Wasn't there some strange name for that period of time around the late 1800s? Something about an abbreviated really freaking cold period or something like that? I do remember the late '70s. Mostly anyway. That was right after they were claiming we heading into another really freaking cold period or something like that. So it's a bad thing that we aren't in a really freaking cold period? | ||

Given a choice between 2-4 degrees cooler or warmer, I'll take warmer. 2 degrees is probably near optimum, based on historical record. Viking Warm period, aka little climactic optimum, 4 degrees might be a shade warm for my taste, Classical Rome, IIRC a brief cold spell around the birth of Jesus, then decent until the Dark ages were in part brought on by a cold cycle, ....... the Danube freezing, the Northern European tribes swamping Rome, the Eastern Empire's consolidation of the Italian Rome, followed by plague...... Lots of plague. The Cold times suck. As to warming causing an ice age? Something to that. Theory as of the late 1970's was that extended arctic ice free time in winter could trigger massive snowfall, that would in turn reflect the Sun's heat and cause/accelerate a cooling trend. When the snow doesn't melt in summer...the year round albedo changes and.... slide into Fimbulwinter. Not proven theory, not as sophisticated as today's popular ones, but I like it for the well thought out synergistic effects, snow + low humidity + solar minimum = kick start. As is turned out, the Solar flux changed and the theory remains untested. OTOH the "current" Climate Models don't work yet. They fail to predict the past. ( so they cannot be counted on to predict the future ) I have high hopes that another century or so will give us a better baseline, and that I'll be safely dead when the Ice Age Comes. Unfortunately, we're about due. Is the Ice age coming? Yes. Period Fracking Dot. It's major, repeating cycle based on orbital dynamics and the heartbeat of solar thermonuclear reactions.... There has never been an Ice Age canceled because of a volcanic active period that I recall, with higher levels of CO2 than now. Can we have a long period of Hot enough to give us "Soylent Green" climate disaster? Don't think so, since it's never happened before. Might though. Complex subject and I'm just a amateur. Ice caps melt and flood the lowlands? Sure. That could happen. You used to be able to walk from London to Paris. ( don't know what the villages were called then... ) | ||

Kenm, Trees use solar photons to drive the chemical reactions, not create matter. The lightning bolt/gamma ray bit, that's a high energy photon getting kicked by an EM field to create/become momentarily a tiny bit of matter & antimatter. Which then recombines to create/become the photon again. Happens all the time. They noticed that there were the tell tales signs of antimatter/matter Annihilation in violent thunder storms. Apparently able to recreate the process in the lab, ( I haven't read up on that part yet ) and if you can do it in the lab, you can make antimatter. Awesome battery, Antimatter. Packaging is a issue. You thought Lithium Ion Battery fires were a problem?  | ||
